REGENTS’ POLICY MANUALSECTION 2—ACADEMICS2.2—FACULTY APPOINTMENTS2.2.1—APPOINTMENTS(The text below appears in the Norman Campus Faculty Handbook)Policies on faculty appointments; appointments <strong>of</strong> new faculty; appointment periods; tenure-track,consecutive term, and temporary appointments; joint and secondary appointments; and part-timeappointments may be found in the Faculty Handbook <strong>of</strong> the Norman and Health Sciences Centercampuses. <strong>Regular</strong> faculty appointment(s) to an academic position must be (a) tenure-track appointment(beginning and terminating at a specified date), (b) a tenured appointment (beginning with and followingthe granting <strong>of</strong> tenure) or (c) renewable term appointment (renewable annually for a fixed term); and mustbe at the rank <strong>of</strong> assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor, or pr<strong>of</strong>essor. Temporary appointments withremuneration are also for specified periods.Appointment <strong>of</strong> New Faculty - In the appointment <strong>of</strong> new faculty, action is initiated by the academic unitthrough the respective dean to the Senior Vice President and Provost, President, and in accord with theprevailing policies <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Regents. The University follows the law <strong>of</strong> the land regarding equalopportunity.(a) Formal Offer - The formal <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> appointment must come from the Senior Vice President andProvost or the President. The <strong>of</strong>fer will include the statement that the appointment is contingent upon theapproval <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Regents. Enclosed with the formal <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> rank and salary will be a copy <strong>of</strong> thefaculty handbook, together with supplementary information on such matters as retirement, groupinsurance, and patents.(b) Contract - If the appointment is approved by the Board <strong>of</strong> Regents, a Contract <strong>of</strong> Employment will befurnished to the applicant for signature if the formal <strong>of</strong>fer is accepted. Included in this contract will be theapproved rank and salary and a statement indicating that the applicant has read the faculty handbookalong with the necessary additions to reflect policies current at the time <strong>of</strong> appointment and acceptsappointment in accord with University policies, with the understanding that policies <strong>of</strong> the University aresubject to change by the Board <strong>of</strong> Regents.Appointment Period for the Norman Campus - Faculty appointments for the academic year are made forthe period August 16 through May 15, though the instructional period may not correspond precisely tothese dates. It is the responsibility <strong>of</strong> the appropriate chair or dean to notify each faculty member <strong>of</strong> thedate the faculty member is expected to start work. The appointment period for the first semester endsDecember 31, even though the semester may end at a different time.Some faculty members on the Norman Campus who have administrative responsibilities are appointed ona 12-month basis, for the period July 1 through <strong>June</strong> 30.Summer term appointments for both campuses for the regular eight-week period are effective <strong>June</strong> 1through July 31. Again, the appointment period does not coincide exactly with the instructional period.Tenure-Track, Tenured, Renewable Term and TemporaryAppointments - Faculty appointments may betenure-track, tenured, renewable term, or temporary.THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA 19
