REGENTS’ POLICY MANUALSECTION 2—ACADEMICSshall have consulted fully with the appropriate academic administrative <strong>of</strong>ficers including the appropriatechair or director, dean, and Senior Vice President and Provost.For those cases where they are needed, the University has at its disposal the more drastic measures <strong>of</strong>severe sanctions.2.1.4—ATTENDANCE AT SUMMER INSTITUTESAcademic administrative <strong>of</strong>ficers on 12-month appointments and in direct charge <strong>of</strong> academicprograms, upon proper prior application and recommendation, may be allowed to attend summerinstitutes designed to improve or maintain their scholarly qualifications for their University work, at noexpense to the University other than the continuation <strong>of</strong> regular salary during the period <strong>of</strong> the institute,subject to the following conditions:1) The applicant will be expected to count the time spent in the institute as vacationtime.2) A maximum <strong>of</strong> two weeks beyond the applicant’s entitlement <strong>of</strong> vacation time maybe spent in the institute without loss <strong>of</strong> salary.3) The frequency <strong>of</strong> such an arrangement may not be greater than once in threesummers.Approval <strong>of</strong> such an arrangement in each individual case may be given by the President uponrecommendation <strong>of</strong> the appropriate dean, as appropriate, and Senior Vice President and Provost, basedupon the work load in the academic unit involved, the appropriateness <strong>of</strong> the institute to the applicant’swork, and the ability to handle the applicant’s work during his absence at no extra cost to the University.(RM, 5-13-65, p. 8147; 1-27-<strong>2004</strong>, p. 28924)2.1.5—FISCAL RESPONSIBILITYIn each case where tenure is awarded, there must be assurance that continuing financial support canreasonably be anticipated. The Senior Vice President and Provost for each campus, in conjunction withthe respective deans, shall determine whether funds are sufficiently secure to support the awarding <strong>of</strong>tenure.(RM, 1-27-<strong>2004</strong>, p. 28924)2.1.6—PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES OF THE FACULTYAbove all else, the University exists for learning and scholarship <strong>of</strong> a breadth and depth that results inexcellence in all <strong>of</strong> the University’s major missions: teaching; research and creative/scholarly activity;and pr<strong>of</strong>essional and University service and public outreach. Each academic unit has an obligation tocontribute to each <strong>of</strong> the missions <strong>of</strong> the University. Faculty members play a central role in therealization <strong>of</strong> these missions and fulfill the obligations <strong>of</strong> the academic unit by contributing their uniqueexpertise and competence. Decisions regarding tenure, promotions, and salary increases are based uponTHE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA 14
