Wood, marble, granite and slate are<br />
natural materials that vary. Use<br />
material samples and printed sample<br />
materials as reference only.<br />
<strong>Knoll</strong>Studio printed and finish<br />
samples offer an example of what an<br />
‘‘average’’ natural material may look<br />
like, within a range of acceptance<br />
carefully delineated by <strong>Knoll</strong>.<br />
Because of the breadth of variations<br />
possible with any natural material,<br />
<strong>Knoll</strong> specialists select these<br />
materials with stringent criteria,<br />
accepting only the top3-5%ofwhat<br />
is available.<br />
Wood<br />
<strong>Knoll</strong> Natural Veneers<br />
All natural finishes are selected from<br />
the finest hardwoods available around<br />
the world. Veneers are flat cut and<br />
carefully matched so that cathedral or<br />
heart patterns are perfectly balanced.<br />
Natural veneers also are cut to allow a<br />
generous margin of quarter-grain<br />
figuring ensuring invisible splicing.<br />

Pattern Pattern<br />
<strong>Knoll</strong> Techgrain ®<br />
<strong>Knoll</strong> Techgrain is a veneer product<br />
that eliminates the inherent<br />
disparities in pattern, color and<br />
texture that characterize natural wood<br />
veneers. The consistency of Techgrain<br />
is important for uniformity. All<br />
<strong>Knoll</strong>Studio Techgrains are<br />
non-figured and feature a regular,<br />
homogenous pattern.<br />
The Techgrain process begins with<br />
wood veneers vat-dyed in natural<br />
vegetable mineral soilines to create a<br />
perfectly clear, integrated color<br />
throughout. The veneer is finish<br />
coated with a clear water-white<br />
catalyzed varnish, a polymer finish<br />
which helps resist staining and<br />
marring. The result is a handsome<br />
surface with the appearance of a<br />
hand-rubbed oil finish.<br />
Finishes<br />
Most finishes are designed to<br />
coordinate with standard Morrison,<br />
Reff and Equity. For reference,<br />
consult the matrix on page 25.<br />
Materials and Finishes<br />
Laminated Plywood (Cirene)<br />
ē De Padova laminated plywood<br />
shells are made of the world’s top<br />
3-5% veneers available. The unique<br />
lamination process allows for an<br />
extremely thin yet sturdy shell<br />
with unmatched flexibility and<br />
dimensionality. Shells are finished in<br />
natural veneer or lacquer.<br />
Marble, Granite and Slate<br />
<strong>Knoll</strong> selects the highest quality,<br />
structurally sound marble, granite<br />
and slate available, through a host of<br />
quarries in Africa, South America,<br />
Greece, Spain and Italy. Because<br />
each mountain range and quarry<br />
have their own signature, every<br />
marble piece - even within a single<br />
quarry - is unique. Hues, veins,<br />
crystals, fossils, clouds, and<br />
distinctive marks will vary from<br />
piece to piece. This is the<br />
extraordinary character of stone<br />
as a material. Below are the marbles,<br />
granites and slates that <strong>Knoll</strong>Studio<br />
offers:<br />
Coated Marbles<br />
Coated marbles have transparent<br />
polyester coating to prevent<br />
use-associated stains. Even with this<br />
protection, marble should not be left<br />
outdoors. Stains should be wiped<br />
immediately. Coating will yellow over<br />
time.<br />
Arabescato<br />
Ivory white with dark grey veining.<br />
May contain random green veins.<br />
Calacatta<br />
Ivory white. Gold and beige random<br />
veins with additional veins varying<br />
from cream to green and grey.<br />
Carrara<br />
White background with grey veining.<br />
Emperador Dark<br />
Dark Brown with light brown and<br />
white veining. Natural finished<br />
stones will contain open fissures and<br />
pin-holes, which is considered a<br />
natural desirable trait.<br />
Empire Beige<br />
Yellowish-cream with yellow and<br />
rose colored veining and fissures.<br />
Nero Marquina<br />
Rich black with random veins that<br />
can vary from white to gold.<br />

Verde Alpi<br />
Green. Black and white veins. Hues<br />
vary in tone and intensity.<br />
White Extra<br />
Light pearl white with grey shading,<br />
random pale to dark grey markings.<br />
Marble may exhibit point inclusions<br />
of dark grey or black.<br />
Natural Marbles<br />
Natural marbles have a protective<br />
sealer to protect the stone from aging<br />
and staining. Sealer has to be<br />
renewed periodically (see product<br />
maintenance on page 27). Natural<br />
marbles are not suitable for outdoor<br />
use.<br />
Carrara<br />
White background with grey veining.<br />
Calacatta<br />
Ivory white. Gold and beige random<br />
veins with additional veins varying<br />
from cream to green and grey.<br />
Emperador Dark<br />
Dark Brown with light brown and<br />
white veining. Natural finished<br />
stones will contain open fissures and<br />
pin-holes, which is considered a<br />
natural desirable trait.<br />
Natural Granites<br />
Natural granites have a sealer to<br />
protect the stone from aging and<br />
staining. Sealer has to be renewed<br />
periodically (see product maintenance<br />
on page 28). Because of its<br />
non-porous density, granite does not<br />
require protective polyester coatings.<br />
Black Andes Granite<br />
Black with reflective mica<br />
crystallines.<br />
Slate<br />
Natural cleft slate is available on<br />
Vignelli PaperClip Tables and SM<br />
Tables.<br />
In combination with a weatherresistant<br />
base, PaperClip tables with<br />
slate tops are suitable for outdoor<br />
use. Please refer to respective<br />
product pages for recommended<br />
finish combinations.<br />
Cane<br />
A natural material, hand-woven for<br />
impeccable finish and smooth<br />
surface. Cane on Cesca chair has a<br />
light polyurethane coating for stain<br />
resistance.<br />

Man-Made Materials & Finishes<br />
Stainless Steel<br />
Completely rust-proof, highly<br />
durable, and resistant to bending<br />
stress. Light scratching blends with<br />
time.<br />
Polished Chrome<br />
Several-step plating process that<br />
includes a heavy layer of nickel for<br />
added rust protection and a bright<br />
mirror finish.<br />
Satin Chrome<br />
Chrome plating applied for a soft<br />
satinized chrome finish with a higher<br />
nickel content.<br />
Nickel Finish<br />
A warm, lustrous finish of nickel<br />
electroplate. Yellowish in color.<br />
Coated with clear lacquer to prevent<br />
oxidation.<br />
Polished Aluminum<br />
A shiny, polished finish.<br />
Clear Anodized Aluminum<br />
A light grey satin finish.<br />
Fused Nylon Rilsan<br />
A very durable and adhesive fused<br />
nylon-dipped finish. Scratch, chip,<br />
and chemical resistant. Appropriate<br />
for outdoor use.<br />
Laminate<br />
An exceptionally durable plastic<br />
surface. Highly resistant to most<br />
chemicals and extensive wear.<br />
Cotton Webbing<br />
100% cotton unfinished webbing.<br />
Cotton/Nylon Webbing<br />
60% nylon, 40% cotton mixed yarns<br />
with silicone water-based protective<br />
coating.<br />
Porcelain<br />
An oven-baked finish on steel<br />
support with high durability.<br />
Outdoor Powder Coat:<br />
Durable outdoor powder finish that<br />
will provide excellent color and gloss<br />
retention with limited exposure to<br />
outdoor elements.<br />
Painted, acid etched glass:<br />
Clear glass with an acid etched top<br />
and painted underside. Polished and<br />
beveled edges surround.<br />
Panelite:<br />
Translucent cast polymer panel with<br />
a clear structural honeycomb core<br />
and an integral cast resin edge.
