Test Objective<br />
California Technical Bulletin 133<br />
(Cal 133) is a full-scale seating test,<br />
not a component test. Testing must<br />
be performed on the designated<br />
seating unit and textile together.<br />
Component data alone cannot be<br />
used to certify compliance with the<br />
regulation. Under Cal 133 you<br />
cannot assume that seating or textiles<br />
that have passed individually will<br />
pass together.<br />
Test Procedure<br />
The seating unit is exposed to a<br />
square open flame gas burner for 80<br />
seconds, positioned at the center of<br />
the seating unit, two inches from the<br />
back and one inch from the seat.<br />

Scope<br />
Cal 133 only applies to seating units.<br />
The bulletin is designed for high risk<br />
public areas:<br />
Nursing homes<br />
Health care facilities<br />
Public auditoriums<br />
Hotels (more than 10 seating units<br />
in one room)<br />
Motels (more than 10 seating units<br />
in one room)<br />
Jails and prisons<br />
Tables and desks are not covered by<br />
the bulletin. Variations may occur in<br />
individual states with regards to<br />
specific application. In California<br />
only, compliance is at the discretion<br />
of the fire marshall in any building<br />
which is fully sprinklered.<br />
<strong>Knoll</strong>Studio Approvals<br />
Tested seating units have been tested<br />
in a worst case scenario thus<br />
covering other fabrics of lighter<br />
weight and same construction. When<br />
specifying Cal 133, the seating unit<br />
may be constructed with a fire<br />
resistant foam and a fire blocker will<br />
be laminated to the textile.<br />
How To Specify<br />
It is easy to specify Cal 133 on<br />
<strong>Knoll</strong>Studio seating. Simply add the<br />
suffix ‘‘C’’ to the end of the pattern<br />
number prior to the textile selection.<br />
Approved textile selections must<br />
have the suffix 133 added to the end<br />
of the pattern number.<br />

Testing Additional Product<br />
If you would like to test a specific<br />
product:<br />
Specify chair and textile desired -<br />
adding appropriate C and 133 codes<br />
as explained.<br />
Testing lead time will be the<br />
standard lead time of the chair plus<br />
4 - 6 weeks for testing procedure.<br />
Test cost will be the regular price of<br />
the chair plus $500 for the testing<br />
procedures.<br />
Cal 133 tested and approved fabrics<br />
and seating units are indicated with a<br />
flame f. All prices below are list.<br />
