Scotia fi re leaves fi ve homeless, destroys home
By JENNIFER FARNSWORTH
Spotlight Newspapers
news@spotlightnews.com
A fast-moving fire at a
Sacandaga Road home in Scotia
left fi ve homeless Tuesday, April 8.
The fi re destroyed the two-family
house at 32 Sacandaga Road,
where flames spread through
the attic, making it impossible for
fi refi ghters to enter the home.
Fire Chief Richard Kasko said
no one was injured in the fi re, and
the department was assisted by
seven other fi re departments.
Kasko credits fire crews
with keeping the blaze under
control and not letting it spread
to neighboring homes.
“I am so proud of our guys. We
even received compliments from
the insurance adjuster who could
not believe that with that type of
fi re, no one was hurt. They really
did a fantastic job,” said Kasko.
By Monday, April 14, the
cause of the fi re was ruled to be
undetermined by the Schenectady
County Firefi ghters Association.
Kasko said the county said the
extent of the damage to the home
made it impossible for them to
be sure whether it was electrical
or not.
He said many spectators
watched as the fi re took close to
four hours to put out.
“People were urged to stay out
of the way, but the house was such
a blaze that we had people taking
pictures,” said Kasko. “With that
much destruction, the case will be
closed as undetermined.”
Towering fl ames could be seen
throughout the village, including
at neighboring school Christian
Brothers Academy.
Headmaster of the school
John Bishop also had praise for
the professionalism of the fire
department. He said that the
students were dismissed half an
hour early from school in an effort
to allow more trucks to get to the
fi re’s location.
“Our first concern was, of
course, getting out students away
from the fi re and smoke, we also
wanted to assist the department
by not bringing in any unwanted
traffi c at the school’s normally busy
dismissal time,” said Bishop.
None of the five people left
homeless had renters insurance
and were not able to salvage any
of their belongings.
A fund has been set up at First
National Bank of Scotia in an effort
to provide essentials and clothing
for the victims. Donations can be
made at the bank’s main offi ce at
201 Mohawk Ave. in Scotia. For
