Rumble at the Oak TreeExtreme heat dominated the second running of Zone 2’s“Rumble at the Oak Tree” PCA club race and advancedDriver’s Ed (DE) at VIR from Friday, June 25 through Sunday,June 27. The paddock temperature reached 106 degrees onSaturday afternoon, and two race drivers needed emergencymedical treatment for heat exhaustion. The heat was so badon Sunday that the two scheduled enduro races were mergedinto one and shortened from90 minutes to 60 minutes.Event volunteers handedbottles of cold water to alldrivers coming off the track,and about 1600 bottles wereconsumed during the event. Idrank ten bottles of water and/or Gatorade each day andsweated off most of it.by Jim Condonalmost 60 drivers, so the track was crowded but everybodyenjoyed a lot of track time. Passing was allowed almosteverywhere except in turns to prevent trains from forming. Myleft arm got plenty of exercise giving passing signals to severalvery fast high-power cars, and I could practice passing slowercars in unusual places.Scott Leopold was theonly actual racer from theShenandoah Region this year,driving Werkstatt’s black andorange Spec Boxster number186 in the sprint races. “MadMel” Brannan, Jim Condon,David Israel, Erin Israel, andEmmett Richardson drove inthe advanced DE. There wasonly one DE run group forThree racers in a high-speed traffic jam.Rick Ebinger volunteeredto assist the PCA NationalScrutineer to make sure therace cars were safe and legal.Jim Condon and EmmettRichardson helped with techinspections for the DE. SherryWestfall was a volunteer at theregistration desk and ferriedbags of ice and cases of bottledwater around the paddock in agolf cart.Club racing is definitely astep up in intensity from DE,attracting the best drivers andfastest cars from a wide area,and the “Rumble” is definitelyworth watching.Werkstatt’s Spec Boxster number 186 sports a striking new black and orange paint job,although the dark color probably made the hot sun even hotter for driver Scott Leopold.Come down and take a looknext year.Photos by Jim Condon13

The festivities begin at 10:00 a.m. with a driving tour fromthe assembly point at the Exxon Station/Pit Stop on the north side of theGum Spring, exit 159 off I-64. Please arrive no later than 9:45 a.m. forwaiver signing and drivers’ meeting.The first 27-mile leg will be north through the former mining town ofMineral to the Lake Anna Nuclear Power Station, which is a two nucleargenerator facility owned by Dominion Virginia Power that has beenin operation for more than 35 years. Participants will receive a 30 to45-minute briefing on the history and operation of the plant, and therewill be opportunities for a bathroom break.The second 15-mile leg will cross Lake Anna several times en routeto the home of Herb Distefano. Porsches will be parked near thewaterfront. A no-charge catered lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m.under the tent alongside the lake.
