from the EDITORBen Briggs2010 PCA National Newsletter Results Are In!Porsche Club of America, Shenandoah Region“Nice color with text”“Good photo captions”“Good use of supplemental features and member input”RPM2009“Good contact info and nice reminder to renew PCA”“I liked upcoming event publicity and event reviews page …”…. And we took third in our Zone out of ten contenders, too!The above represent just a few of the comments The HeatExchanger received in the national PCA newsletter contest. This year, we chose to enter our July 2009 and December2009 issues primarily because both issues featured manymember photos and highlighted our year’s biggest events thatreflect the highest membership involvement.JULY 2009InSIde: RPMCoLoR PhotoPULL-oUt!Porsche Club of America, Shenandoah RegionWithout bragging too much, the judges were very impressedwith the use of color on not only the cover but also theinside spread. Yeah, color does sell. Two judges mentionedthe excellent use of typography and layout, and creditshould be given to Brian Becton, of the PrintSource prepressdepartment. Brian is given somewhat free reign over thedesign and layout of the inside spread, and it shows in hiswork. We also received good organizational comments, and I credit“assistant” editor Nancy Vetter … but the without contributingmembers like Sherry Westfall, Alex Smith, Bill Sanders andRick Ebinger, among others, there would be no newsletter toorganize. Last, but not least, we received congratulations onour consistently excellent array of photos which have beensupplied from Bill Sanders and Jim Condon on a consistentbasis. Our brilliant newsletter covers are the work of Jim whonever fails to deliver a stunning photograph of a Porsche froma new and interesting angle. One criticism from the judges was the lack of tech articles. We’d received several good articles in past issues, butunfortunately they were not included in the two issues thatwe submitted. It would be great, however, to see more techarticles …. Or maybe even a regular monthly feature …anybody? All in all, I’m proud of receiving a “bronze” for all of our hardwork, and sincerely appreciate the contributions from ourmembership …. PARADE 2010 – St. Charles, IllinoisThe Road to Recovery…Every year when the Parade is concluded, I get thesame feeling that I need a week off to recover! There is just so much to see and do, old friends tocatch up with, and if you have entered any of thecompetitive events then certainly some time neededto wind back down again. Whew, what an exciting andpacked week…by Cole ScroghamPhoto by Cole ScroghamThis year was no different. The staff at St. Charles washappy to see us when we arrived, and eager to helpresolve an early room issue. They even kept a straightface when asked about that funny smell in the water, which I think was probably the most asked question atthe front desk for the week! Water aside, the PheasantRun provided more than adequate amenities andoffered one thing I really enjoy about Parades, easywalking access to most of the things I wanted to see.Concours prep was just across the road and one gameof frogger away from the lobby, the Concours site wasout the back door on the golf course, and all of theimportant locations such as Hospitality (our family’sfavorite spot), the Goodie Store, Art Show and the techsessions were also in the main hotel. This year was a big switch for me, I have been totwenty Parades and not once do I recall being preparedenough for the Concours to have time to attend theWelcome Party. This year I had heard so much aboutthe Party from Chairman Pat Yanahan that I had totry it out. The big draw was a display of significantPorsches and WWII era aircraft at the local airportadjacent to the hotel. I have to admit being drawn tothe 904 that was on display (same owner since 1970!)and completely missing the extremely rare fighter planecontinued on pg 169

Rumble at the Oak TreeExtreme heat dominated the second running of Zone 2’s“Rumble at the Oak Tree” PCA club race and advancedDriver’s Ed (DE) at VIR from Friday, June 25 through Sunday,June 27. The paddock temperature reached 106 degrees onSaturday afternoon, and two race drivers needed emergencymedical treatment for heat exhaustion. The heat was so badon Sunday that the two scheduled enduro races were mergedinto one and shortened from90 minutes to 60 minutes.Event volunteers handedbottles of cold water to alldrivers coming off the track, and about 1600 bottles wereconsumed during the event. Idrank ten bottles of water and/or Gatorade each day andsweated off most of it.by Jim Condonalmost 60 drivers, so the track was crowded but everybodyenjoyed a lot of track time. Passing was allowed almosteverywhere except in turns to prevent trains from forming. Myleft arm got plenty of exercise giving passing signals to severalvery fast high-power cars, and I could practice passing slowercars in unusual places.Scott Leopold was theonly actual racer from theShenandoah Region this year, driving Werkstatt’s black andorange Spec Boxster number186 in the sprint races. “MadMel” Brannan, Jim Condon,David Israel, Erin Israel, andEmmett Richardson drove inthe advanced DE. There wasonly one DE run group forThree racers in a high-speed traffic jam.Rick Ebinger volunteeredto assist the PCA NationalScrutineer to make sure therace cars were safe and legal.Jim Condon and EmmettRichardson helped with techinspections for the DE. SherryWestfall was a volunteer at theregistration desk and ferriedbags of ice and cases of bottledwater around the paddock in agolf cart.Club racing is definitely astep up in intensity from DE,attracting the best drivers andfastest cars from a wide area, and the “Rumble” is definitelyworth watching.Werkstatt’s Spec Boxster number 186 sports a striking new black and orange paint job, although the dark color probably made the hot sun even hotter for driver Scott Leopold.Come down and take a looknext year.Photos by Jim Condon13

PARADE 2010 – St. Charles, Illinois continued from pg 9parked behind it. I guess you know where your heartlies when someone has to tell you that the plane isone of perhaps five still inexistence and worth millions, for me it was just a suitable backdrop for my favoriteof all Porsches…Pirelli and Porsche Cars North Americaalso managed to raffle off a new Cayenne in supportof Advocate Health Children’s Hospital, the first timethat a Parade event has helped a worthy cause, and thefood was representative of the local Chicago culinaryscene. The evening was capped off for me and my sonMichael as I was asked to drive the brand new White/Gold GT3RS on display back to the hotel, I suppose thatsince I had entered another RS in the Concours andtaken it apart in a million pieces that I was the “expert”in how they worked, little did they know I had yet todrive it! I was very careful with that car and treated itnicer than my own, thinking that some very lucky PCAowner would do the same for me.The next day at the Concours came early, about 5amon the clock and we were unwrapping the RS to driveit across the street. John Takehara’s worker bees werethick on the golf course, arranging cars so that headjudge Paul Gilbreath could start the clock. We were oneof the last cars to be judged and I had only a few carsto judge, so I had time to wander around and see someof the cars. I was most impressed at both the qualityand quantity of the Porsches on display, but I felt thatsome of the cars in the paddock and in Hank Weil’sHeritage and Historic Display were more worthy thaneven those being judged! Porsches representing nearlyevery year of production from a 1948 Gmund coupeto the latest Turbo were there, so if you were any kindof Porsche history buff this was the place to be. Wemade some new Porsche friends this year (parked nextto Jim and Suki Cambron), I think we made friends forlife sharing stories of our families and Porsche exploits. Finally, we were judged and managed a great award forour efforts with the RS, but for my sons Michael andLuke that just meant that the cleaning was over and wecould finally drive the car!The next day was time off for me, and whoever decidedto hold the Concours banquet on the day followingthe Concours instead of trying to cram it all in one daydeserves my everlasting thanks. Off to a late breakfast,I was treated to some time with Michael and HennyCotton who had joined Weldon and Phyllis Scroghamin the hotel restaurant. I was able to learn some newthings about England and how we colonists are viewedover there, but also about Michael’s fantastic careerwith Porsche Cars Great Britain. Michael was a part of akey time in Porsche history, worked with some notablePorsche names such as Manfred Jantke and establisheda 924 spec series. After that time Michael wrote severalbooks including the 24:16 bio of Norbert Singer andcovered European racing as an editor for our ownPanorama magazine. Now that Michael has turned overmost of his writing duties to son Andrew, he and Hennyhave some time to themselves. This was their first visitto the US in many years, and Henny’s perspective wasdelightful as she noticed many differences betweenAmerican and British culture. She managed to ask aman who had recently moved from his seat by the poolif she had “pinched” his chair, and was rather confusedas an older lady from PCA was regaling Henny with thereasons she needed to purchase a $400 invisible bra.The confusion made for some great laughs!Hank Weil's new toy - we delivered it to him at Parade - under the wing of a vintageplane. PARADE 2010 – St. Charles, Illinois continued from pg 16One thing I enjoy about the Parade is that the locationvaries from year to year. This year, in close proximityto Chicago, our family headed off to the city in searchof the Sears (sorry, “Willis”) tower and authentic deepdish pizza. We had a water taxi ride and saw the sightsafter a long train ride, and were happy we did not haveto take the train to work every day. Chicago really is abeautiful city, with the Lake Michigan shore reachingright into the heart of downtown. We could only stayone day, as loading up from the Concours and gettingready to leave after the Tech Quiz was the priority inorder to get home in time. We came back in time tosee the Art Show, which is really a neat and varieddisplay that we all really enjoyed. I wish more peoplewould share their artistic talents with us! The final eventfor me was the Tech Quiz. I had not taken the Techquiz since the 1988 Colorado Parade, so that was anadventure and I was surprised at the number of peoplein the room, but getting 2nd place in my group withouta clue what a study was a surprising result! Perhapshanging around the historic display isn’t such a badthing to do after all…Henny and Michael Cotton - VIP guests for Porsche Parade - contributing writer for manyautomobile publications and articles found thoughout many Panoramas!Photo by Cole ScroghamMy First PorscheNot my lastVisit& Ask For $50 off on your custom Framing- 182 Zan road, charlottesville, VA - 434.978.7872For All Your Picture Framing Needs17

Carolinas Region DE at VIRThe Carolinas Region hosted an unusual nonweekendDE on Monday, July 12 and Tuesday,July 13 at the Virginia International Raceway (VIR).Consequently there were only 84 drivers divided intofour run groups of about 20 each. There was alwaysplenty of space on this track, which is long enough toaccommodate 50 cars at once. The whole event wasunusually relaxed and low key. There were more 944’sthan GT3’s, unlike some other recent DE’s dominatedby high-power cars. The Blue Ridge Soap Box DerbyYou might ask yourself what Soap Box Derby andPorsche have in common. Well, lots of car guysand gals have kick started their budding automotiveinterest with Soap Box Derby. Aside from that tenuousconnection, this year’s Blue Ridge Soap Box Derbyin Waynesboro was supported in a big way by G&WMotorwerkes Ltd., operated by our own Weldon &Phyllis Scrogham. They provided space in their facilityon Main Street in downtown Waynesboro to supportthe pre-race inspection and impound of the Soap BoxDerby cars. The Soap Box Derby racecourse uses thestreet in front of their business.by Dan GraffThe race in Waynesboro is an annual event.
