If of a low,trifling, immoral type, such will be thecharacter of the people among whom itcirculates. All history, experience,and observation demonstrates this fact.It is to be found in the rise and fall ofmen and parties, nations and dynasties.Deprive a people of their literature andthey degenerate into barbarism. Limitthem to immoral literature, and debaucheryand crime are sure to overtakethem sooner or later.It costs no more to feed people onsound philosophy, draped in properlanguage, than it does to surfeit themwith cheap romance adorned in ragsand polluted in filth. But another objectorreplies that the public taste requiressuch literature, and the paperswould not sell without it. If this be
