State Synods, which control the Seminary.The following was finally adopted--eight to three:The Board having carefully consideredthe address of Dr. Woodrow,published in pursuance of the request ofthis Board, adopts the following:First--That the Board does herebytender Dr. Woodrow its thanks for theability and faithfulness with which hehas complied with their request.Second--That in the judgment ofthis Board the relation subsisting betweenthe teachings of Scripture and theteachings of natural science are plainly,correctly and satisfactorily set forth insaid address.Third--The Board are not preparedto concur in the view expressed by Dr.Woodrow as to the probable methodsof the creation of Adam's body, yet inthe judgment of the Board there isnothing in the doctrine of evolution asdefined and limited by which it appearsinconsistent with perfect soundness infaith.Fourth--That the Board takes thisoccasion to record its ever-growingsense of the wisdom of our Synod in theestablishment of the chair of the "Perkin'sProfessorship of Natural Science,in Connection with Revelation," and ofthe importance of such instruction as isthereby afforded, that our ministry maybe better prepared to resist the objectionsof infidel scientists and defendthe Scriptures against their insidiouscharges.The minority then entered their protestagainst the action of the Board inrefusing to enjoin one Prof. Woodrownot to teach that evolution is God'splan of creation, and that the body ofAdam was probably evolved from loweranimals.
