Heb.2:11.This portion of the word is of a highly important character, and ofgreat concern to us, for it clearly reveals our relationship to the lawof the highest. It is vastly important that we understand from theword of God what is written concerning the calling, character andrelation to the world, of the individuals that sustain so close arelationship as is implied by the brethren of Christ, so that we cancompare our character and relation to the world, with what iswritten concerning the same in the word of God, and see whetherwe are able to identify ourselves with the inspired portrait of thecharacters of those who shall finally be reckoned the brethren ofChrist, the Son of the living God.In the first place let us consider the calling of the brethren, for theScriptures certainly teach very emphatically that they are a calledpeople.Who is it that calls them? for if they are called, some one must callthem. We will refer to the word and see if we can find who it is thatcalls, and how they are called. "Moreover whom he didpredestinate, them he also called." Rom. 8:30. "Who hath saved us,and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but
according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us inChrist before the world began. 2 Tim. 1:9.How does God call? Let Paul answer: "Whereunto he called you byour gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ." 2Thes. 2:14. Then God calls by the gospel. What is the gospel? It isthe voice of God by Jesus Christ proclaiming glad tidings of acoming kingdom. God who at sundry times and in divers mannersspake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these lastdays spoken unto us by his Son, wherefore he saith, "Today if yewill hear his voice, harden not your heart." Heb. 3:7. Jesus calledby the gospel when he was on earth, and then he gave thecommission to his disciples, and so the calling goes on through thelong dark night until the fulness of the gentiles are come in. "Mysheep hear my voice and I know them, and they follow me and Igive unto them eternal life." John 10:27. The sheep are the same asbrethren.We will now notice what is meant by following Jesus as the GoodShepherd who giveth his life for the sheep, for it is said that hissheep follow him, and if they follow him they must pass throughthe same road that he passed; and a description of the follower ofJesus will also describe the character of the brethren. Well, wecannot follow Jesus in repentance, for he knew no sin, but we canfollow him in immersion, and in reality this is the first step that canbe taken in following Jesus."After he was baptized Jesus was tempted of the devil, and must thebrethren who follow Jesus, follow him in temptation? Yes, it isnecessary that we be tempted. He tempted Jesus, and shall he nottempt us? My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into diverstemptations, knowing this, that the trying of your faith workethpatience, and patience experience, and experience hope. So, then,temptations are necessary, that our faith may be tried and patiencewroughtR811 : page 4out in us. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation, for when heis tried he shall receive the crown of life. God who calleth us isfaithful and will not suffer us to be tempted above what we are ableto bear; but will with the temptation make a way to escape that wemay be able to bear it.Thus, if we would follow Jesus the Good Shepherd, we must betempted as he was tempted, and we must also resist temptation, ashe resisted it. "Resist the devil and he will flee from you."If we endure the temptations that befall us, we shall be able toidentify ourselves with the character of the holy brethren asrecorded in the word of God.
