Demand isincreasing rapidly, while the traditional sources offossil fuels are diminishing. This coupled with thedrive to reduce carbon emissions is pushing theindustry to search for radically different solutions.Small businesses have been identified as beingresponsible for >50 percent of the innovationsand >90 percent of all “radical innovation”. It’s nocoincidence therefore that Statoil is looking atSmall to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to providesome of the critical technologies for the future.SME’s unlike larger corporations are muchmore venerable to market conditions and as aresult a large proportion of them do not survivebeyond their first 3 to 5 years, in many casescondemning technologies or ideas that couldhave a huge impact on the industry to thegraveyard. Problems including lack of sufficientfinancing, poor understanding of the market, lackof understanding/awareness of the technicalrequirements for the industry, incompleteunderstanding of the environment in which thetechnology has to operate and a lack of focus ontechnology implementation can be detrimental toSMEs.Statoil recognizing the need to support SMEs,particularly during the first critical years beforetheir technologies have achieved commercialsuccess, formed Statoil Technology Invest (STI) toprovide expert technical and financial guidance aswell as project based or venture capital funding.STI is staffed with Statoil employees withexperience in finance, mergers & acquisitions,board management, marketing & sales, technologydevelopment and implementation and oilfieldtechnologies. STI is supported by the largertechnical community within Statoil and as aresult can provide expert advice on technologydevelopment and qualification, as well as providingtest wells for qualified technologies. The financesrequired for STI’s investments are derived directlyfrom revenues earned from Statoil’s globaloperations.
