Taking action
There are different types and causes of
hearing loss in children. And each case
is unique. Specific tests are necessary to
determine the kind of hearing problem
your child has, as well as the most
effec tive solution. Consult a qualified
Hearing Care Professional for a thorough
evaluation as early as possible, in order
to avoid delays in language acquisition.
Counseling and support
After your child is fitted with hearing
instruments, there may be a period of
adjustment. Part of this process may
include counseling for both the child
and family members. Informal counseling

• Obtain your child’s attention
before speaking by calling his/her
name or signaling.
• Stand close and keep still when
speaking.
• Face your child to allow him/her
to see your facial expressions and
lip movements.
• Speak slowly in a clear and audible
tone of voice using simple
sentences, and gesture if necessary.
• Check for understanding by
observing his/her facial expression.
• Give your child time to respond
to questions.
• Be patient, positive, encouraging,
and praise generously.

Equipped with a host of safety
features, it is one of the safest hearing
instruments available for your child.
While its special protective coating repels
dirt and grease, the instrument’s tough
housing protects it from bumps and drops.
Siemens Explorer also features a babysafe
battery door lock to prevent your
child from pulling out the battery. It is
designed so that kids can’t open it, but
parents can do so easily using a small
screwdriver.
Every Siemens Explorer instrument
comes with a pediatric ear hook,
developed specifically for babies and
younger kids. It’s easy to screw on but
difficult for your child to unscrew.
A rugged push button gives fingertip
access to all its program modes, with

Little ears need small hearing instruments,
but also lots of power. Siemens Explorer
500 M and 500 P are designed to optimize
the balance between size and power, and
are versatile enough to fit kids of all ages.
Moreover, in cases where hearing loss
increases with age, you don’t have to
worry about finding a new device every
time a change is detected.
Siemens Explorer’s amplification can be
easily adjusted to suit changing hearing
needs.

High frequency speech sounds are important
for speech understanding and clarity.
Clinical studies indicate that hearing
instruments with extended frequency
range may improve speech understanding
and language acquisition of hearingimpaired
children 1 .
So we designed Siemens Explorer with an
extended frequency range, which supports
language acquisition by allowing children
to hear words more distinctly.

Listening closely to the teacher
Direct Audio Input (DAI) is made for connecting
kids to school. This empowering
technology literally brings a teacher’s or
your voice directly into your child’s little
ears. Fully compatible with virtually all
FM transmitters used in schools, the Direct
Audio Input feature lets kids of all ages
establish dedicated audio connections with
parents, teachers and other care-givers.
In addition, Siemens Explorer’s “Speech
activated FM” feature allows fully automatic
operation of the DAI. When no
FM signal is received, Siemens Explorer
automatically activates the microphone.
But as soon as speech is detected coming
from the FM system, it quickly and automatically
switches to the FM setting.

Inserting the hearing instrument
First insert the earmold into your child’s ear,
pushing gently until it is seated firmly. Then lift
the tubing and ear hook over the top of the ear
and adjust it comfortably behind the ear.

3 Robust screw-on ear hook
The pediatric ear hook is easy to screw on, but hard to
unscrew, so babies can’t take it off.
4 Water-resistant nanocoating
This coating helps the instrument retain its sheen even
after extended use.
5 Baby-safe battery door
The battery door lock resists forces of more than 20 N,
which is equivalent to the weight of more than 4.4 lbs
(2 kg) pulling on the batterycompartment. It’s virtually
impossible for infants and toddlers to open.
6 Audio shoe
The audio shoe enables direct audio connection. It is
compatible with most FM systems and provides an
excellent signal-to-noise ratio for learning in school or
at home.

1. Open the battery compartment.
2. Lift the audio input cover and close the battery compartment.
3. Place the gold contacts of the audio shoe against the audio
input contacts of Explorer and rotate the audio shoe forward
until it clicks into place.
4. To remove the audio shoe, rotate the audio shoe in
the opposite direction and close the audio input cover of
Explorer.
7 LED visual status indicator
The optional LED (only 500 P) indicates the status of
the instrument. The convenient positioning of the LED
lets you and teachers check the instrument without
removing it from the child’s ear.
