MIG WELDINGMIG/MAG (metal inert gas / metal active gas)weldingMIG/MAG welding is a semiautomatic welding process thatcan produce moderate to high weld metal deposition. It issuitable for all positions and material thicknesses. The mostcommon welding method in today’s welding industry, it isalso becoming more and more popular with hobby users. In MIG welding, wire is fed continuously from a wire spoolto the MIG gun. Accordingly, MIG welding is referred toas a semi-automatic welding process. Kempomat andKempoweld machines are conventional MIG machines withstepped control for the voltage and stepless regulation ofthe wire feed speed. The Kempact, WeldForce, FastMig,and Kemppi Pro Evolution solutions, which are inverterpower sources suited mainly for industrial application, provide stepless voltage and wire feed speed control in bothwire feeder and full remote control. For home and hobby use, the new MinarcMig Adaptive150 and 180 are opening up completely new possibilities insingle-phase net supply. These small, lightweight machinesalso offer one-knob welding power regulation based on theplate thickness used.Synergic MIG weldingIn synergic MIG welding, the user controls the weldingpower with a single knob on the basis of the base material, shielding gas, and filler wire used.A synergic MIG welding machine has pre-programmedparameters in machine memory (covering the synergiccurve). This decreases the number of user-regulatedparameters to just one: welding power. Arc length canbe regulated separately, to match the joint type, weldingposition, and welding application. The WeldForce, Kempact Pulse 3000, FastMig Synergic, and Kemppi Pro Evolution products allow synergic MIGwelding.Pulse MIG weldingPulse MIG is an extension of the standard MIG weldingprocess. Here, short-duration high-current pulses transforma drop from the filler wire without a short circuit. In this way, spray arc metal transfer conditions are established across theentire operating current range of the equipment. In pulseMIG welding too, synergic control ensures that only weldingpower needs adjustment. The main benefits of pulse MIG welding can be seen in itsspatter-free weld result, good weld seam form, and ease ofuse with thin materials. The pulse MIG process is widely usedwith difficult-to-weld base materials and wires: special steels, aluminium, stainless steels, copper, and nickel-based alloys.Kempact Pulse 3000 and Kemppi Pro Evolution offersynergic pulse MIG welding possibilities.Double pulse MIG weldingThe double pulse MIG process is a variation of pulseMIG welding that applies alternating double pulse MIGparameters. The main purpose of the double pulse weldingis to enhance weld quality by improving the weld seamappearance and the weld profile. The Kempact Pulse 3000 and Kemppi Pro Evolution aremulti-process welding machines that can be used for pulseMIG and double pulse MIG welding.Adaptive MIG weldingConventional MIG/MAG welding is an easy method for boththe professional and the non-professional welder to use, withone exception. Making the proper settings may be a trickytask – sometimes it is not so easy to find the right balancebetween a suitable welding power and the voltage and wirefeed speed. There have been several methods developedto make this easier, but previous methods required eithermaking several settings with the aid of tables/manuals or avery good knowledge of welding. One way to avoid theseproblems is adaptation. Applying this concept, the machineitself performs welding process measurements and makesthe decisions on how to balance wire feed speed andvoltage. If the machine takes care of the voltage and wirefeed speed, the user always gets a stable arc and need selectonly the proper power level. If designed well, the machinecan propose the correct power level for the various materialthicknesses. The MinarcMig Adaptive 150 and 180 machines are madeaccording to this idea, and practice has confirmed that ourvision of easy welding was correct.KEMPPI PRODUCTCATALOGUE 2006/2007 7

TIG WELDINGTIG (tungsten inert gas) weldingIn TIG welding, the arc is formed between a tungstenelectrode and the base material. The high melting pointof tungsten ensures that the arc energy cannot melt theelectrode. Argon, used as the shielding gas, is fed throughthe TIG torch to shield the electrode and molten weld pool. This type of welding can be done with or without filler wire.If filler wire is used, it is fed to the weld pool separately.DC TIG weldingThe direct-current TIG welding process is used to weldstainless steels and titanium, as well as carbon and low alloysteels. TIG welding is a popular process for applicationswhere high product quality is necessary: piping, foodindustryapplications, metal furniture, and use in the energysector. All Kemppi TIG welding machines are inverters: the MasterTigand MasterTig MLS, the Kemppi Pro Evolution system, andthe new MinarcTig 180 all are suitable for DC TIG welding. For home and hobby use, the Minarc 150 MMA machine canbe equipped with a TIG torch, allowing TIG welding to bedone with the same machine. The main benefits of TIG welding are a totally spatter-freeweld, narrow weld seam, and good visual seam appearance.AC TIG weldingAlternating-current TIG welding finds its application in workwith aluminium and magnesium alloys. The primary areaof application for AC TIG welding is use with thin materials, but the process is also used frequently in repair welding forthicker aluminium pieces. The aluminium oxide layer in the base material surface keepsit free of corrosion but at the same time necessitates the useof AC current in the TIG welding process. Also, aluminiumis highly electrically and thermally conductive, making it adifficult material to weld. All Kemppi AC TIG welding machines function as inverters. The MasterTig AC/DC and MasterTig MLS AC/DC machinesoffer both alternating and direct current. This makes thesemachines a universal solution, suitable for all base materialsthat can be welded with TIG.MIX TIG weldingMIX TIG is a combination of AC and DC TIG. Current isswitched between AC and DC at a frequency of about 2 Hz.Weldable materials are the same as in AC TIG welding. The main application for MIX TIG is welding thin and thickwork pieces together, as control of the welding pool is easierthan with normal AC welding. This feature is available in the MasterTig MLS 2300 ACDCmachine.KEMPPI PRODUCTCATALOGUE 2006/2007 35

MMA WELDINGMMA (manual metal arc) weldingManual metal arc welding also commonly goes by thename ‘stick electrode welding’. In the MMA welding process, various types and diameters of coated electrodes are used. This is the most widely used welding process in the worldtoday, although the proportion of MMA use is decreasing asthe use of gas-shielded welding processes grows. The main benefit of MMA welding is that it does not needany shielding gas; protection for the weld pool comes fromthe melting electrode cover. This is important for those userswho prefer welding outdoors.Another important benefit is that electrodes can be boughteverywhere, also in small packages.Kemppi’s range of MMA welding machines offers inverters ofDC constant-current type for all user groups, from 150 A ofwelding current up to 500 A.Both Minarc 150 for home/hobby use and ‘Master’ family andmulti-process Pro Evolution power sources for industry areavailable.KEMPPI PRODUCTCATALOGUE 2006/2007 49

MONITORINGPRO WELD DATA NETWORKBenefits• Simultaneous monitoring of up to64 manual or automated weldingmachines• Accurate on-line information onwelding parameters, duty cycle, andproduction costs• Alarm and filtering functions thatensure fast reaction in the event ofquality deviationsMain applications• Productivity follow-up• Deviation tracking and monitoring ofquality• Production cost analysesWhy is monitoring essential? With ever tightening international competition and the increasing demandsof modern production operations, the acquisition and level of knowledgebecome increasingly important. The cost structure and schedules of weldingproduction do not allow for a comprehensive inspection programme, norcan the quality of welds be 100% tested using non-destructive test methods(NDT) afterward. Consequently, quality must be achieved by doing the rightthings in the right way and ensuring that this remains the case. In responseto these needs, Kemppi offers the PRO-PC interface for monitoring singleunits and the Pro Weld Data Network for monitoring multiple units (up to 64).The use of monitoring programmes makes it possible to ensure consistentquality, monitor productivity, and create a tool for the further developmentof production. Monitoring the condition of equipment allows for easyscheduling of preventive maintenance, thus ensuring efficient, uninterruptedproduction.Kemppi Data Monitoring is a data monitoringsystem for Kemppi Pro product familyKemppi Pro Weld Data software together with DLI 20 andPC units establishes an integrated Data Monitoring System. The Interbus-field bus is used for data transmission in DataMonitoring System. KEMPPI ARC SYSTEMKemppi ARC System– Analyse Refine ControlLabour costs75 %Others25 %Labour costs are themajor part of the weldingcosts, about 75%. Theremaining 25% comefrom consumables, gas, energy and capital costs ofequipment .When you ask a welder, supervisor or productionmanager about the company’s welding arc time, you oftenget replies such as ‘between 30 and 60 per cent’. Thesereplies are mainly based on a general feeling, as the real arctime is never really measured. A welder’s work is seldommere welding but includes sheet metal work, tack welding, grinding and so on. For this reason, the actual arc time isprobably closer to 15 or 20 per cent, depending on the workand the objects welded.Kemppi Arc System is based on wireless communicationand software for analysing the retrieved data and creatingproposals for action. The system enables, e.g., maintenanceactions based on actual service needs instead of elapsedcalendar time only, and better targeting of the data collectedon the products, welding place, and welder. There are different complementary technologies for wirelesscommunication. The different technologies ensure that thedata from all machines can be collected in the system, even ifwireless communication is prevented by closed structures.Possible technologies for data collection– separate network– Ethernet network– portable data collectionIn their efforts to increase weldingproductivity companies have traditionallyconcentrated on mechanisation, robotics andautomation. However, manual welding stilltoday represents a major part of welding inmany companies. Kemppi Arc System hasbeen especially designed to help companiesincrease the productivity and quality of theirmanual welding. For further information please contactKemppi Oy / Customer Service,e-mail: export@kemppi.comKEMPPI PRODUCTCATALOGUE 2006/2007 71

ARC UNDER CONTROLSTANDARDS & NORMSWelding equipment that keeps the arc undercontrolThe purpose of a Kemppi welding machine is to produce afailure-free arc, ensuring high work productivity and highweld quality for the customer. Kemppi welding machineskeep the arc under control because our machinescontinuously analyse the changes in the arc and compareagainst the pre-set values. Based on that comparison, themachine automatically controls the arc and adjusts thesettings to ensure optimal welding results. A 100% Kemppiguarantees good arc control features.Reliable welding equipment performance is imperativewhen considering productivity. The machine must workwithout failure and ease of use is of primary importancewhen the operator needs to set the welding parametervalues. Design quality and strength in these areas helpto guarantee the quality of the weld produced and alsoproductivity of welding. Researched and verified by Kemppi’sreal customer needs, the importance of the arc has becomemore emphasised. The arc is a visible part of welding, whichwe can both see and hear. It is possible to distinguish someerrors in the arc through listening. Eyesight lets us viewthe quality of the seam both during and after the weldingprocess. The new high-speed camera enables detailed monitoringand analysis of the arc in different situations. At the sametime, it provides information on the behaviour of the moltenweld pool for different basic materials. An oscilloscope canbe used in connection with the video picture to retrieve theelectric variables of the process. The research results can beused in development of new products and creation of newinnovations for control of welding processes.Kemppi’s product promise ‘Arc Under Control’ is basedon facts discovered in our research. The knowledge gainedis transferred to our products. The ‘100% Kemppi’ label isthe guarantee of quality, which can be seen in the Kemppiarc. The high-quality welding result provides our customerswith enhanced productivity and high product quality. Weat Kemppi take our responsibility for producing weldingequipment that keeps the ‘Arc Under Control’.Kemppi Oy is committed to technical excellence that istestified with ISO 9001 quality management system receivedalready in 1990 and ISO 14001 environmental managementsystem since 2001. All Kemppi welding machines andaccessories have CE marking. CE mark indicates that aproduct complies with all European directives and essentialharmonized standards for health, safety, environment andconsumer protection that may apply to that product.Kemppi welding machines are designed and manufacturedby Kemppi Oy in Finland in conformity with following IECand EN-standards:EN 60974-1 Safety requirements for arc weldingequipmentIEC 60974-1 Part 1 Welding power sourceIEC / EN 60974-2 Welding power source - Part 2: Liquidcooling systemsIEC / EN 60974-5 Welding power source - Part 5: WirefeedersIEC / EN 60974-7 Welding power source - Part 7: WeldingtorchesIEC / EN 60974-10 Welding power source - Part 10:Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)RequirementsOperating temperatureKemppi welding machines have a wide operationtemperature from -20˚C to +40˚C, so machines are suitablefor even the extreme conditions.Degree of protectionDegree of protection for Kemppi machines is IP 23C. IPclassification, degree of protection is shown as two digits:The first digit 2 indicates guarding protection duringoperation and handling for solid bodies with a diameterbigger than 12 mm. The second digit 3 indicates equipmentis protected against water spray falling at up to 60 degreesfrom the vertical.Duty cycleRated power of Kemppi welding machines is given asamperage based on the duty cycle percentage. The dutycycle has been tested and its performance characteristics aregiven for the temperature of +40°C. Therefore the actual dutycycle value can be higher in normal room temperature. Dutycycle 60% means 6 min arc time and 4 min rest time. However, we can’t only use our senses in the developmentarc control features for welding machines; instead, this requires, for example an oscilloscope to measure theelectrical phenomena in the arc. Is using such measurementdevices enough in the development of an arc controlsystem? For Kemppi it is not, and therefore we have investedheavily in research equipment, including in a new highspeeddigital video camera.Critical electronic components are carefully selected andtested by Kemppi in accordance with Kemppi’s own standardrequirements. Electronic units are manufactured and testedby Kemppi. After final assembly all machines are tested inKemppi’s production. Kemppi’s production departmentkeeps test files available for 10 years.Kemppi’s mission is that Customers rank Kemppi’s productsand services to be the best on the market.78 KEMPPI PRODUCTCATALOGUE 2006/2007 79
