Welcome to the downloadable 


This booklet is produced for users of the 

Cleveland Way National Trail. It gives 

information on facilities available and a wide 

range of hotels, bed and breakfast 

and hostels along the route. 

In addition there are contact numbers for pubs, shops and Doctors 

along the route. This will make it easier for you to enjoy and plan 

your walk. For example you can ring ahead to check if a pub is 

doing lunches on a certain day. Most addresses are on or close to 

the route and none are further than three miles distant. During the 

summer it is highly advisable to book accommodation in advance 

so you are not disappointed at the end of the day to find that all 

the accommodation is booked up. We also recommend that you 

consider starting midweek or reverse the route to start from Filey 

– if you are struggling to find accommodation. 

Most of the bed and breakfasts and hotels within this guide have 

been, or are awaiting inspection, either by VisitBritain or the AA. 

Hotel and B&B Ratings 

Hotels and B&Bs in this guide that are inspected are given a 1 – 5 

star rating. All the assessing bodies use the same star rating criteria 

when they assess all types of accommodation. 

The number of stars gives you an indication of accommodation 

standard, cleanliness, ambience, hospitality, service and food. 

Generally, the more stars the higher the level of quality.

While every effort has been made to ensure that the details are as 

accurate as possible, properties are not inspected by the Cleveland 

Way Project and it cannot be held responsible for any inaccuracies 

within this guide nor for any consequence arising from the use of 

the information. Walkers are advised to check details for themselves 

when booking. 

Car Parking 

We recommend you use public transport to get to and from the Trail. 

However, if you are intending to walk the Cleveland Way and wish to 

park your car in a public place, you are advised to inform the local 

police of your intentions. For information on where to park your car, 

please contact the nearest Tourist Information Centre. 

Public Transport use the bus or train 

There has never been a better opportunity to get to and from the 

Cleveland Way by bus or train than there is now. Rail services 

connect to York, Malton, Thirsk, Middlesbrough, Great Ayton, 

Whitby, Scarborough and Filey. In addition bus services can get you 

to the start at Helmsley from York, Malton or Scarborough. 

Take advantage of the Moorsbus network. These buses connect 

with many of the previously unserved western parts of the Cleveland 

Way such as Sutton Bank, Osmotherley and Clay Bank.

European Visitors 

If you are arriving at Hull using North Sea Ferries, you should be 

landing at about 8.00am. The ferry company will provide a bus to take 

foot passengers to Hull Railway Station. From Hull Station you can 

catch a train to Scarborough and a bus on to Helmsley (number 128). 

On finishing the walk you can catch either a bus or train directly from 

Filey back to Hull.

Cleveland Way Passport Scheme 

The Cleveland Way Passport is available, sponsored by the Black 

Sheep Brewery. You can get the passport stamped at places on or 

near the route and when it’s complete send it for a free certificate 

to mark your achievement on the Cleveland Way. You can get your 

passport from the National Park address at Helmsley or from any of 

the Information Centres listed at the end of this guide.

background information to help you make the most of your visit to

Cleveland Way Merchandise 

There are a number of different products that you can purchase 

to remind you of your experiences on the Cleveland Way. 

Cloth badges, stick badges and lapel badges are available from 

Helmsley Tourist Information Centre. Hand crafted Cleveland Way 

plaques are available from Cromwells of Ocean View, Coble Heads,

Cleveland Way Official Completion Books 

The official completion books for the Cleveland Way are held at both 

the Country Park Stores in Filey Country Park – just a few hundred 

metres from the finish at Filey Brigg and at Filey Tourist Information 

Centre. Feel free to sign either book.

Waymarking 

Waymarkers bearing the words ‘Cleveland Way’ and the National 

Trail symbol – a stylised acorn – can be found at most junctions 

with other paths or roads. Away from roads, the acorn waymarker 

on gates and stiles serves as a check that you are on the 

correct route.
