Applies to all <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong> <strong>Augustine</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> <strong>St</strong>udentsACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICYAcademic IntegrityAcademic integrity means that all academic work represents the individual work <strong>of</strong> the stated author.Input and assistance from others must always be appropriate and fully acknowledged. Any deviation fromthis policy will be considered Academic Dishonesty.Academic DishonestyAcademic dishonesty can occur in many <strong>for</strong>ms and variations. The following is a list <strong>of</strong> some academicdishonesty <strong>of</strong>fenses:1. Cheating - a <strong>for</strong>m <strong>of</strong> misrepresentation. Cheating can include but is not limited to:a. Using another’s work as your own.b. Utilizing a paper or assignment bought or taken from a website.c. Allowing someone else to turn in your work as his or her own.d. Several people writing one paper and turning in separate copies, all represented (implicitlyor explicitly) as individual work.e. <strong>St</strong>ealing an examination or a solution from the instructor.f. Looking at another student’s exam.g. Using notes or other aids in an exam when they are not permitted.h. Sharing exam questions with other students.i. Sharing case scenarios from a practical with other students.2. Fabrication - is the <strong>for</strong>gery or invention <strong>of</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation or citation in an academic exercise. Thismight include the use <strong>of</strong> false results in a research study or fabricating a resource <strong>for</strong> a referencelist.3. Facilitating Dishonesty - assisting another to per<strong>for</strong>m an act <strong>of</strong> academic dishonesty. Thisincludes someone taking an exam other than the appropriate student. It may also address misuse<strong>of</strong> a proctor or falsification <strong>of</strong> a required proctor.4. Plagiarism - Plagiarism is a serious academic <strong>of</strong>fense. The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Health</strong><strong>Sciences</strong> defines plagiarism as “knowingly using the words, ideas or language <strong>of</strong> another authorwithout giving credit to the work”. In its severest <strong>for</strong>m, plagiarism is the theft <strong>of</strong> another’sintellectual work.The <strong>University</strong> does recognize that there are many “colors and shades” <strong>of</strong> plagiarism and at times, it mayeven be an inadvertent mistake such as leaving <strong>of</strong>f a reference from a bibliography.Intentional violations are a much more serious <strong>of</strong>fense. An example <strong>of</strong> this might be the use <strong>of</strong> aparagraph from a journal article without citation in a report or bulletin board response. It is with this inmind that the <strong>University</strong> has defined the following “levels <strong>of</strong> misconduct.”Level One Academic DishonestyLevel One violation typically occurs as a result <strong>of</strong> students not familiarizing themselves with writing andcourse requirements. They may include:1. Lazy plagiarism-<strong>for</strong>getting a citation or leaving a reference <strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> a reference list.2. Failure to cite or acknowledge a source in a small or limited part <strong>of</strong> the paper.Most Level One misconduct <strong>of</strong>fenses are dealt with by the instructor. Actions may include:1. Re-submission <strong>of</strong> the assignment2. An additional assignment3. Reduction <strong>of</strong> grade<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> 38
