Applies to all <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong> <strong>Augustine</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> <strong>St</strong>udents• <strong>St</strong>udents should be respectful <strong>of</strong> other health care pr<strong>of</strong>essions.The student should be respectful <strong>of</strong> and responsive to authorized <strong>University</strong> personnel and guests, andshould observe the defined line <strong>of</strong> authority with respect to any activities including clinical assignments.<strong>St</strong>udents should use appropriate titles and surnames when addressing authorized <strong>University</strong> personnel.Failure to observe these and other basic principles <strong>of</strong> ethics is pr<strong>of</strong>essionally unacceptable and could bepotentially compromising (see "attitude" statement under <strong>St</strong>udent Interpersonal Skills).The following interpersonal behaviors are expected at all times:Of paramount concern is that students and graduates <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> display and present a positive andrespectful attitude to their patients, colleagues, supervisors, faculty, staff, community, and to the<strong>University</strong>. This "attitude" is a key ingredient to successful completion <strong>of</strong> studies at the <strong>University</strong> and toexcel as health care pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. <strong>St</strong>udents will endeavor at all times to:• Respect the worth and individuality <strong>of</strong> every person; e.g., listen/pay attention while others arespeaking and promote constructive feedback.• Refrain from disruptive behavior.• Refrain from proselytization. Proselytization is defined as aggressively and/or harassingly tryingto convert, recruit, or induce someone to join one’s own political cause or to espouse one’s owndoctrine.• Respect confidentiality.OFF-CAMPUS PERSONAL CONDUCT AND STANDARDSIf a student commits an <strong>of</strong>fense <strong>of</strong>f-campus that is not associated with a <strong>University</strong> connected activity, thedisciplinary authority <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> will not be used merely to duplicate the penalty awarded <strong>for</strong> suchan act under applicable ordinances and <strong>St</strong>ate or Federal laws. The <strong>University</strong> will take disciplinary actionagainst a student <strong>for</strong> such an <strong>of</strong>f-campus <strong>of</strong>fense only when it is required by law to do so, or when thenature <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>fense is such that in the judgment <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>:• The continued presence <strong>of</strong> the student on campus is likely to create interference with theeducational process and the orderly operation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.• The continued presence <strong>of</strong> the student on campus is likely to endanger the health, safety, orwelfare <strong>of</strong> the members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> community or their property, or that <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.• If the <strong>of</strong>fense committed by the student is <strong>of</strong> such a serious, heinous or repulsive nature as toadversely affect the <strong>University</strong> community and the student's suitability as a member <strong>of</strong> thepr<strong>of</strong>essional community, a prompt hearing shall be held to determine what action should be takenby the <strong>University</strong>.The action taken by the <strong>University</strong> shall be made without regard to pending or completed actions taken byany <strong>of</strong>f campus <strong>of</strong>ficial body.STUDENT RIGHTSAll students enrolled at the <strong>University</strong> are accorded the basic rights as set <strong>for</strong>th by the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees.<strong>St</strong>udent rights are as follows:• The right <strong>of</strong> respect <strong>for</strong> personal feelings.• The right <strong>of</strong> freedom from indignity <strong>of</strong> any type.• The right to expect an education <strong>of</strong> the highest quality.• The right to make the best use <strong>of</strong> one's talents and time toward the objectives which broughthim/her to the <strong>University</strong>.• The right to inquire about and to recommend improvements in policies, regulations, andprocedures affecting the welfare <strong>of</strong> students.• The right <strong>for</strong> students and/or their representatives to meet with the appropriate Program Directorand the President.<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> 30
