Transitional Doctor <strong>of</strong> Physical Therapyfacial is <strong>of</strong>fered during one <strong>of</strong> the scheduled weeks. Sports Physical Therapy students need to contactNASMI to register and attend the necessary certification segments provided by NASMI. Thecorresponding coursework <strong>for</strong> the sports courses is no longer available but you may complete a directedstudy or directed readings course to correspond with each seminar.You need to attend the seminar be<strong>for</strong>e completing the credit assignment. You do not have to wait untilyou complete the credit assignment be<strong>for</strong>e taking the next seminar.COURSE EXTENSION<strong>St</strong>udents can receive up to 15 weeks <strong>of</strong> extension time per course. Once you pass the original completiondate, you will receive an incomplete grade ("I"), which will be changed after you complete the course. Ifyou do not complete the course after 15 weeks <strong>of</strong> extension, your incomplete grade becomes an “F”.<strong>St</strong>udents must contact transitional DPT <strong>of</strong>fice if you are in jeopardy <strong>of</strong> not completing the course in thestated time frame.To request an extension, please <strong>for</strong>ward the in<strong>for</strong>mation below to the Administrative Assistantafter you have spoken with your instructor:Course nameInstructor’s nameHow much <strong>of</strong> the course is completedHow much time you think will be neededCAPSTONE PROJECTThe <strong>University</strong> is searching <strong>for</strong> ways <strong>for</strong> a doctoral student to make a contribution to the pr<strong>of</strong>ession andhas elected to promote the value <strong>of</strong> publishable case reports and/or articles reflecting in<strong>for</strong>mationimportant to the pr<strong>of</strong>ession. The Capstone Project is a summation <strong>of</strong> the body <strong>of</strong> knowledge learnedduring the degree program. It is designed to assist the student in critically reviewing pr<strong>of</strong>essionalliterature and being able to express ideas using a scientific style <strong>of</strong> writing. These manuscripts will requirea good deal <strong>of</strong> time commitment and assistance from an assigned faculty advisor. It is anticipated that,after completion <strong>of</strong> this written project, a student will be ready to submit the manuscript to an appropriatejournal <strong>for</strong> review and possible publication or be able to submit the material <strong>for</strong> an oral or posterpresentation at a pr<strong>of</strong>essional meeting.Completion <strong>of</strong> this course requires submission and grading <strong>of</strong> a written manuscript. If the student is in acertification track, the topic must be in the student’s certification area and related to physical therapypractice in that specialty area.Option A: One Case ReportA case report <strong>for</strong> publication is a detailed presentation, analyzing a particular real life patient case. Itshould be well reasoned and referenced showing a depth <strong>of</strong> comprehension and understanding, as well asexhibiting learning and reasoning sufficient <strong>for</strong> a publishable product in a peer-reviewed journal.Recommended Text: Writing Case Reports, 2nd. ed. by Irene McEwen (APTA Publication, 2001)Option B: One ArticleAn article may take the <strong>for</strong>m <strong>of</strong>:Literature Review: critical analysis <strong>of</strong> literature on a specific topic <strong>of</strong> interest to PT’s.Perspective: scholarly paper addressing pr<strong>of</strong>essional issues.Descriptive Technical Report: describes, evaluates, and documents the specification or mechanicalaspects <strong>of</strong> a device used by PT’s in intervention or measurement.Course Prerequisite• For the master’s <strong>St</strong>udent: Completion <strong>of</strong> coursework (a minimum <strong>of</strong> 19 academic).• For the bachelor’s <strong>St</strong>udent: Completion <strong>of</strong> coursework including required courses (55 academiccredits)<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> 169
