Transitional Doctor of Physical TherapyGOOD ACADEMIC STANDING, ACADEMIC PROGRESSION, RETENTION,WARNING AND PROBATIONThe role of the Academic Progression and Retention Committee (APRC), in conjunction with the StudentServices Office, is to monitor each student’s academic progress throughout the curriculum. Grades fromeach faculty member are submitted to the APRC at midterm for their review. At the end of each trimester,grades are submitted to the Registrar. The Registrar will notify students who are placed on probation orare dismissed from the respective academic program of their status.1. To remain enrolled in the t-DPT Program, the student must maintain:• Active Status or Approved Leave of Absence Status• Good Academic Standing2. Active Status:• A student is in active status if the student:a. Registers for and begins one (1) course within twelve (12) weeks after officialacceptance into the program, andb. Completes a course within six (6) months of acceptance into the programc. Registers for a minimum of five (5) credits each ensuing full calendar year or fewercredits with the written permission of the Program Director, and completes thosecourses within the prescribed period, andd. Maintains timely and effective communication with the program office.3. Leave of Absence:• An enrolled student who wishes to obtain a leave of absence from the program must submit aformal written request to the Program Director for review and response. The Student musteither withdraw or complete any current course work prior to the LOA request. The requestshould outline extenuating circumstances and define the amount of leave of absence timeneeded.a. A maximum of six months leave of absence per request may be granted.b. The student’s enrollment expiration date will be extended by the length of theapproved leave• Students should be aware that any leave from the institution may have a financial aid impactand should consult with the Financial Aid Office. In compliance with federal regulations, forFederal financial aid purposes, a Leave of Absence is treated the same as a withdrawal. If youare considering taking a leave of absence, please be aware of the following.a. In accordance with financial aid regulations, a leave of absence cannot exceed 180days. If your leave of absence exceeds 180 days your loan will go into repaymentstatusb. You must make written request to be granted a leave of absence (refer to your studenthandbook for procedure).c. You will be required to complete exit counseling prior to beginning an approvedleave of absence.d. It will be necessary to reapply for loans upon return to school.e. You must notify the Financial Aid Office upon your return to school, so that yourlender, guaranty agency, and National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) can benotified.4. Inactive Status:• A student will be placed on inactive status when failing to complete five (5) credits within a12-month period based on the date of admission to the program. The student will receive aletter from the University registrar notifying him/her of this status change.• When the student completes five (5) credits within one (1) calendar year, he/she will beplaced back on active status (Note: seminars alone do not count toward academic credit andmeeting this requirement).University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences 160
Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy• If the student does not complete at least five (5) credits within one (1) year of being placed oninactive status, he/she will be referred to the Progression Committee for possible dismissalfrom the program.• A student may be placed on inactive status only once during enrollment in the t-DPTprogram. The student will be dismissed from the program if he/she fails to meet the yearlyrequirements for coursework progression a second time.5. Good Academic Standing:• To remain in good academic standing a student must:a. maintain a 2.25 GPA and 2.50 for students accepted into the program after January 1,2012 (see Probation information below)b. not earn a grade below a C (See Dismissal section)c. be in compliance with the University Academic Integrity Policy which stipulates thatall academic work represents the individual work of the stated author. Input andassistance from others must always be appropriate and fully acknowledged6. Probation:• A student who makes a grade of “D” in any course will be placed on academic probation andmust undergo remediation and repeat the course for credit. A remediation plan must bedeveloped by the student and will be monitored by the Program Director.a. When retaking the course, the student must receive a grade of “C” in order to progressacademically.b. If the student receives a grade below a “C” on retake, the student will bedismissed.c. When the grade of “C” or higher, is achieved on retake, the student will be taken offAcademic Probation if his/her GPA is 2.25 or 2.50 for students accepted into theprogram after January 1, 2012.• If the GPA of a student falls below the 2.25 or 2.50 for students accepted into the programafter January 1, 2012, the student will be placed on academic probation by the ProgramDirector.• Following being placed on probation, the student will be required to submit an academicstudy plan to the Program Director to explain how he/she plans to elevate the GPA to 2.25 or2.50 for students accepted into the program after January 1, 2012. The Advance StudiesProgression Committee will review all study plans.• The student will be expected to elevate his/her GPA to 2.25 or 2.50 for students accepted intothe program after January 1, 2012 or above within one (1) calendar year. If a student fails toelevate his/her GPA to 2.25 or 2.50 for students accepted into the program after January 1,2012 or above, the student’s record will be referred to the Advanced Studies ProgressionCommittee for review and possible dismissal from the program.• A student will not be permitted to progress to the final stage of the t-DPT program while onprobation. Remedial coursework may be necessary to increase the GPA prior to starting thefinal project. The final stage for the t-DPT program is Capstone I and II or the ClinicalResidency Course.7. Dismissal:• If a student does not register for one (1) course within twelve (12) weeks after officialacceptance into the program, the Program Director will notify the Registrar to send thestudent a notice of dismissal.• Based on recommendations of the Advanced Studies Progression Committee, the studentmay be dismissed from t-DPT Program when a student:a. Fails to maintain active status.b. Does not return to active status after an approved leave of absence period.c. Receives a grade of “F” in any Course.d.
