Transitional Doctor <strong>of</strong> Physical TherapyPURPOSE OF THE TRANSITIONAL CLINICAL DOCTORATEThe purpose <strong>of</strong> the Transitional Clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy is to provide physical therapistswith opportunities to augment knowledge, skills and behaviors attained in initial pr<strong>of</strong>essional education(i.e., the level <strong>of</strong> CAPTE standards required <strong>of</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>essional [entry-level] DPT Program). As pr<strong>of</strong>essionsevolve, it is important that all practitioners develop in ways that meet contemporary practice standards.To address the public’s need <strong>for</strong> high quality physical therapy service, this degree is designed to providepracticing clinicians with opportunities to develop knowledge, skills and behaviors commensurate withcontemporary practice and education standards.MISSION STATEMENTThe mission <strong>of</strong> the transitional Doctor <strong>of</strong> Physical Therapy (DPT) is to develop leaders in physicaltherapy patient examination, evaluation, intervention, and case management. Special focus is placed onthe foundational sciences <strong>of</strong> anatomy and biomechanics, while enhancing the clinical reasoning andtreatment skills <strong>of</strong> the student. Because this program is designed <strong>for</strong> physical therapists that work inclinical practice, it is expected that students will bring about positive improvements to the workplace asthey progress through the program. This program will help to promote the pr<strong>of</strong>ession by developingexperiences that address the critical issues found in the delivery <strong>of</strong> health care today.PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES• Be prepared, by academic knowledge to practice in an emerging arena <strong>of</strong> autonomous practice bythinking logically, critically, creatively, and independently.• Graduates will communicate with clarity, depth and precision in an area <strong>of</strong> in relation to aclinical patient case.• Graduates will demonstrate competency in measuring clinical outcomes.• Graduates will demonstrate skills needed <strong>for</strong> practicing autonomously.• Develop leadership skills in an area <strong>of</strong> clinical practice that will promote the pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> PT and thepatients who receive care.• Graduates will report on alumni survey that they have utilized leadership skills in their worksetting.• Graduates will participate in or present in a pr<strong>of</strong>essional activity related to continuingeducation.• Graduates will accept responsibility <strong>for</strong> evaluating new knowledge and its relationship toeffective patient care.• Graduates will demonstrate sound decision-making skills in relation to leadership scenarios.• Display pr<strong>of</strong>essional skills such as life-long learning, ethical behaviors and interdisciplinarycollaboration within pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice.• Graduates will report publication or presentation <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional opportunities and work.• Graduates will report employment opportunities and projects that portray pr<strong>of</strong>essional skills.• Develop effective communication skills in physical therapy practice in order to advance pr<strong>of</strong>essional goals.• <strong>St</strong>udents will demonstrate self-reflection related to personal and pr<strong>of</strong>essionalaccomplishments as a result <strong>of</strong> their studies.• <strong>St</strong>udents will demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>essional communication as evidenced by written skills incourse essays and patient care assignments responding with clarity, depth and precision.• <strong>St</strong>udents will produce a publishable quality final Capstone paper.• Apply depth <strong>of</strong> knowledge and critical thinking skills in selected areas <strong>of</strong> theory and clinicaltechniques as it relates to patient care and supported by evidence based practice.• <strong>St</strong>udents will demonstrate a logical sequence to problem solving given a case or clinicalscenario.• <strong>St</strong>udents will express satisfaction with outcomes <strong>of</strong> Capstone Project.• Pass all oral, written and practical certification examinations.• Graduates will apply (whether clinical, educational or administrative) evidence frompr<strong>of</strong>essional/scientific literature.<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> 156
