Transitional Doctor <strong>of</strong> Occupational TherapyThe Clinical Integration MentorAn occupational therapy mentor can be a faulty member or experienced clinician who specializes in yourarea <strong>of</strong> interest. A mentor will need to have some or all <strong>of</strong> the following qualifications:• At least five (5) years <strong>of</strong> clinical experience in area <strong>of</strong> specialization;• AOTA Board Certification or other recognition/certification in area <strong>of</strong> specialization, preferred;• Teaching experience (academic, continuing education presentations, and/or clinical instructor);• Actively engaged in patient care;• Able to spend 1:1 clinic time with the student;• Agrees with and upholds the patient care philosophy <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.Responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the Clinical Integration MentorMentoring is a significant portion <strong>of</strong> the Clinical Integration course in terms <strong>of</strong> your learning. Yourmentor is responsible <strong>for</strong> facilitating learning through:• assisting you in developing objectives and goals;• supervising you in direct patient care by instructing, refining treatment and evaluation techniques;• providing other mentors to assist you in achieving objectives;• meeting with you on a weekly basis to review and revise objectives;• providing critique and guidance <strong>for</strong> the development and submission <strong>of</strong> case reports andposter/plat<strong>for</strong>m presentation;• conducting a weekly review and signing your journal;• assisting or providing guidance in the development <strong>of</strong> effective communication with theoccupational therapy staff, other health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and community at large;• evaluating your skill level and reporting the results to the <strong>University</strong>;Financial Arrangements with the SiteIt is your responsibility to seek out and make arrangements with the clinical site and mentor. The <strong>University</strong>may be <strong>of</strong> some assistance in providing potential sites/mentors through its network <strong>of</strong> graduates and clinicaleducation sites. Any financial arrangement between you, the clinical site, and mentor is, however, a matter <strong>of</strong>agreement between those three entities. The <strong>University</strong> will not be a party to the negotiation nor will it haveany financial arrangement with the site or mentor.Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development AssessmentA Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development Assessment (PDA) is conducted upon completion <strong>of</strong> the Clinical Integrationcourse in order to provide students with feedback regarding development <strong>of</strong> interpersonal,communication, and pr<strong>of</strong>essional behaviors. Each OTD student will complete the Pr<strong>of</strong>essionalDevelopment Checklist and meet with his/her faculty advisor to discuss his/her comments and any facultyobservations. The PDA meeting also provides the student with an opportunity to share feedback that mayimprove OTD program effectiveness.DEGREE COMPLETIONOnce all <strong>of</strong> coursework and assignments have been completed, you can submit a Graduation Applicationavailable in the myUSA portal <strong>St</strong>udents tab to the director <strong>of</strong> the program or administrative assistant <strong>of</strong> thedepartment. In order to graduate from the program, you must have:• All fees and tuition paid in full, including the graduation fee.• All coursework completed and graded to meet the degree requirements.• An overall GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0.The Director <strong>of</strong> the OTD program will per<strong>for</strong>m a degree audit to verify completion <strong>of</strong> the minimum number<strong>of</strong> credits while the financial <strong>of</strong>fice will assure that all fiscal obligations to the <strong>University</strong> or its subsidiarieshave been met in full.You have the option <strong>of</strong> attending one <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s commencement ceremonies held on the Floridacampus in April, August or December.
