Transitional Doctor <strong>of</strong> Occupational TherapyCourse Extension<strong>St</strong>udents can receive up to 15 weeks <strong>of</strong> extension time per course. Once you pass the original completiondate, you will receive an incomplete grade ("I"), which will be changed after you complete the course. Ifyou do not complete the course after 15 weeks <strong>of</strong> extension, your incomplete grade becomes an “F”.<strong>St</strong>udents must contact OTD <strong>of</strong>fice if you are in jeopardy <strong>of</strong> not completing the course in the stated timeframe.To request an extension, please <strong>for</strong>ward the in<strong>for</strong>mation below to the Administrative Assistant after youhave spoken with your instructor:• Course name• Instructor’s name• How much <strong>of</strong> the course is completed• How much additional time you think will be needed to complete the courseCapstone ProjectBe<strong>for</strong>e you can register <strong>for</strong> Capstone II you must complete Capstone I. The Capstone II Project is thefinal course in the OTD program. It may take the <strong>for</strong>m <strong>of</strong> a community service project, a ProductDemonstrating Excellence (PDE), a clinical research project, or a case report. The assignment mayinvolve designing the methodology, implementing and collecting data to measure the project’s outcome.The results may be shared through a poster, publishable article, or oral presentation.Capstone Projects that involve human subjects or data collection must be approved by the <strong>University</strong>’sInstitutional Review Board (IRB). The IRB meets several times each trimester to review projectproposals. Your faculty advisor will in<strong>for</strong>m you about IRB submission deadlines. IRB deadlines arestrictly en<strong>for</strong>ced. Your faculty advisor will give you more in<strong>for</strong>mation on IRB should it be a component<strong>of</strong> your Capstone Project. All capstone projects are required to be presented at the university be<strong>for</strong>egraduation.Please remember if you are planning on graduating, your graduation application needs to be completedand submitted to the program Administrative Assistant 60 days prior to graduation.Clinical Integration CourseYou may choose to complete the Clinical Integration course under the supervision <strong>of</strong> an occupational therapyfaculty member or a clinical mentor, and earn from four (4) to eight (8) credits toward the OTD degree. It isrecommended that students who want to complete this course <strong>for</strong> higher amounts <strong>of</strong> credit (five or more) beemployed on a part-time or full-time basis in order to assure enough patient contact <strong>for</strong> the creditassignments. The following in<strong>for</strong>mation details site and mentor standards.Clinical Sites:A clinical integration site is any site where quality occupational therapy services are being delivered in theclinical practice area in which you wish to specialize. The duration <strong>of</strong> your clinical integration is tied to thenumber <strong>of</strong> credit hours you are seeking <strong>for</strong> the Clinical Integration course. You will need to complete a total<strong>of</strong> 120 contact hours <strong>for</strong> eight (8) credits.Characteristics <strong>of</strong> a quality clinical site include:• An invigorating environment;• Learning objectives targeted to specific needs <strong>of</strong> the student;• Ethical practices in the clinic;• Congruent patient care philosophy between the site and <strong>University</strong>;• Administrative support <strong>of</strong> clinical practice;• Effective staff communications;• Commitment to pr<strong>of</strong>essional development;• Sufficient support services;• Adequate space and staff <strong>for</strong> patient load.<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> 152
