Distance/Online EducationDISTANCE/ONLINE EDUCATIONPURPOSE OF DISTANCE/ONLINE EDUCATION: It is the intention <strong>of</strong> this university to <strong>of</strong>feronline coursework that will parallel the mission and philosophies <strong>of</strong> the Distance Education Program. Weaim to provide a program that is unique to the health care education <strong>of</strong> physical and occupationaltherapists and orthopaedic physician assistants while at the same time maintaining uni<strong>for</strong>mity in contentand presentation.PHILOSOPHY OF DISTANCE/ONLINE EDUCATION: The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong>intends to provide a delivery method <strong>of</strong> education that not only excels in quality, but is unique inper<strong>for</strong>mance. We aim to provide an education that facilitates rich learning environments, that includesopportunities <strong>for</strong> acquiring basic and advanced skills, knowledge, conceptual understanding and relevanceto the health and clinical sciences. The education provided should not function as an isolated dimension <strong>of</strong>intellectual activity, but as contributions to learners’ development <strong>of</strong> strong identities as individuallearners and participants in meaningful social and educational practice.DISTANCE EDUCATION CORE VALUES-Develop and Provide a Rich Curriculum-Facilitate Interactive Learning-Utilize High Quality Faculty-Use <strong>of</strong> High Quality/User Friendly Plat<strong>for</strong>mMETHODS FOR DELIVERY OF ONLINE EDUCATION COURSES:The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong> will <strong>of</strong>fer a variety <strong>of</strong> <strong>for</strong>mats in educational delivery. Below is asummary <strong>of</strong> such <strong>of</strong>ferings:1. Pure Online Course - This course <strong>for</strong>mat <strong>of</strong>fers content that is delivered purely online.Most <strong>of</strong>ten you will have scheduled interaction with an experienced faculty member as wellas your other classmates. Occasionally a pure online course may <strong>of</strong>fer you the opportunity towork at your own pace and interact only with your assigned faculty member.2. Combination Laboratory/Online course - This course <strong>for</strong>mat <strong>of</strong>fers lecture-typematerials in an online <strong>for</strong>mat with weekend laboratory sessions in a face-to-face (traditional)<strong>for</strong>mat. In many cases the online course materials will be reviewed prior to attending theweekend laboratory sessions.3. Traditional Lecture/Laboratory - In rare cases a course may be delivered in anexclusively live <strong>for</strong>mat (not online).4. Seminar/Online – This means you will need to first attend a seminar. The most up-to-dateseminar calendar is available under Continuing Education on the <strong>University</strong>’s websitewww.usa.edu. You will be able to see when and where seminars are being provided.Secondly, after attending the seminar, you will need to complete the online course thatcorresponds with the seminar you attended. These courses are 10 weeks long.5. Residency – These courses require you to be on-site. Being a distance education program,we keep these to a minimum.6.
