STUDENT POLICIES RELATED TO CLINICAL EDUCATIONClinical EducationPhilosophyThe <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> is committed to the ideal that pr<strong>of</strong>essional educationrequires a sound academic preparation in conjunction with practical clinical affiliation experience. To thisend, the clinical education program seeks to provide a variety <strong>of</strong> stimulating environments to further thestudent's pr<strong>of</strong>essional development.The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> is committed to providing each student anopportunity to meet their educational goals by providing the highest level <strong>of</strong> education in a variety <strong>of</strong>areas <strong>of</strong> patient care that is rein<strong>for</strong>ced and built upon in the clinic. <strong>St</strong>udents are expected to activelyparticipate, question, explore, teach, and motivate during their interactions with the clinical community torein<strong>for</strong>ce their learning experiences and thereby enhance their education.Clinical Education Sites stimulate the student to look beyond the in<strong>for</strong>mation learned in the classroom todiscover further meanings and relationships within the pr<strong>of</strong>ession. Sites are selected <strong>for</strong> their ability tocreate learning situations that encourage the student to expand their knowledge, abilities, and skills. TheClinical Education Sites provide the students with an awareness <strong>of</strong> fiscal responsibility as it impacts theirclients and institutions. The clinical affiliation experience exposes the student to realistic environments toallow practice in interdisciplinary communication, documentation, supervision <strong>of</strong> support personnel,problem solving, and the ethical, medico legal aspects <strong>of</strong> patient care.The Clinical Education Department, working in conjunction with faculty personnel, places each student atthe best possible clinical site available <strong>for</strong> the time period <strong>of</strong> their internship. We are very <strong>for</strong>tunate tohave many affiliations throughout the United <strong>St</strong>ates which contributes to our ability to place every studentevery term. We ask that each student approach their clinical assignment with excitement and a sense <strong>of</strong>adventure that will give them the best possible experience.Clinical Education Site RecruitmentFacilities that meet the standards and the needs <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> will be invited to become a ClinicalEducation Site. The relationship between the Clinical Education Site and the academic program is<strong>for</strong>malized through the <strong>St</strong>udent Clinical Experience Agreement (contract). <strong>St</strong>udents will be placed onlyin clinical sites that have a duly executed contractual agreement with the <strong>University</strong>.If a student would like the Clinical Education Office to pursue a new site, the student MUST completeand submit the “Clinical Education New Site Request Form – DPT, MOT, MOPA”, during their firstterm.Clinical Site Contact:Contact with potential Clinical Education Sites may occur by:1. A member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> Clinical Education Committee contacting the facility directly;2. The facility contacting the <strong>University</strong> directly;3. The facility being recommended to the <strong>University</strong> Clinical Education Committee by a member <strong>of</strong>the Advisory Committee, another program, a student, a faculty member, or an alumnus <strong>of</strong> theprogram.4. An Occupational Therapy student upon approval by Clinical Education CommitteeIt is <strong>University</strong> policy that all contact with clinical sites MUST be coordinated through the ClinicalEducation Office.<strong>St</strong>udents, relatives or anyone associated with students are restricted from personally contacting any site<strong>for</strong> clinical affiliation placements <strong>for</strong> the purpose <strong>of</strong> recruitment. <strong>St</strong>udents are also restricted fromallowing any family member, friend or acquaintance from contacting any site <strong>for</strong> clinical affiliationplacements <strong>for</strong> the purpose <strong>of</strong> recruitment. All leads should be brought to the Clinical EducationOffice <strong>for</strong> processing.
