HistoryThe 300 acres that are the Clearfield Firemen’s Commerce Park have experiencedseveral incarnations before becoming some of the most sought-after real estate alongAmerica’s Artery, Interstate 80.Located in the area of Lawrence Township known as Wolf Run, named for the creek andwildlife that once roamed the wilds, it’s easy to imagine the rolling hills thick with treesand sprawling meadows dotted with bison and deer. Despite today’s hustle and flowof traffic, travelers and commerce, the breathtaking vistas provide a glimpse of whatthe first explorers saw in Chinklacamoose, the place Native Americans called “clearfields”.

The site remains steeped in history as the location of theFulton Cemetery, one of the oldest burial plots in ClearfieldCounty, and the Fulton Tunnel, which houses rail tracksrunning beneath Interstate 80.Appalachian Wood ProductsWolf Run’s fortunes changed with the construction ofthe interstate and savvy business owners foresaw thespectacular access and visibility translating to prosperityand success. It was with this in mind that, in the mid-1960s, the ClearfieldFire Department purchased the three family farm propertiesas a new home for the Clearfield County Fair. When a suitable facility for the fourth largest fair inPennsylvania proved too expensive, the ClearfieldCounty Fair and Park Board set its sights on industrial andcommercial ventures and partnered with the ClearfieldFoundation and its public sister organization, the LawrenceTownship Wolf Run Industrial Park Authority, to marketthe

site. Eventually, the fair board sold the remaining parcelsto the foundation, which has poured millions of dollars intoinfrastructure and advertising. While the original businesses at Exit 120 have been pluggingalong busily and lucratively for more than 30 years, thepast decade has witnessed an explosion of developmentand construction. The final phase of expansion on the land where BillMackereth milked his dairy cows will surely be the mostexciting chapter of Wolf Run’s rich history. New industries, shopping opportunities and restaurants and the jobs theywill bring will be welcome additions to a community eagerto embrace them.
