4 Conservation Areas and Historic Monuments<strong>Walmer</strong> remains rich in historical and architectural interest.<strong>Walmer</strong> Castle is perhaps the most prominent of the 29 listedproperties in the parish with Deal Castle lying just beyond thenorthern boundary. There are two scheduled AncientMonuments in the parish – <strong>Walmer</strong> Castle and the ruins of the11 th Century Manor House near Old St. Mary’s Church in Upper<strong>Walmer</strong>. <strong>Walmer</strong> Castle, together with its extensive grounds, isregistered by English Heritage as a Park and Garden of SpecialHistoric Interest.The parish has three conservation areas, shown in red on theadjacent map. The Upper <strong>Walmer</strong> Conservation Area includesbuildings that were part of the original village of <strong>Walmer</strong>. The<strong>Walmer</strong> Seafront Conservation Area takes in Admiralty Mews –the former Naval Hospital and later the Royal Marines’ Schoolof Music, most of Archery Square and seafront properties alongMarine Road, The Beach, The Strand, York Road and CampbellRoad. The South Barracks Conservation Area includes thebuildings and open spaces that were formerly part of the SouthBarracks of the Royal Marines.4
