Coaches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year/continuedBoys’ Cross CountryScott Kendricks, Oxford High SchoolA native <strong>of</strong> Clarksdale, Coach ScottKendricks was Clarksdale High’s most valuabletrack athlete, establishing school recordsin <strong>the</strong> 1-mile and 2-mile runs. He lettered incross country and track at Ole Miss beforejoining <strong>the</strong> coaching pr<strong>of</strong>ession in 1999 atOxford High. During his 13 years <strong>of</strong> coaching,he has paced <strong>the</strong> Oxford thincladders to2 Class 4A girls’ cross country state crowns,5 Class 4A boys’ track state titles and <strong>the</strong> 2011Class 5A state championship for his boys’ cross country squad. Overall,his Oxford track and cross country teams have captured eightstate championships since 1999. <strong>The</strong> MAC also honored CoachKendricks as Coach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year in 2000 for girls’ cross country andin 2003 for boys’ track.Girls’ Cross CountryNathan McLellen, East Union High SchoolA native <strong>of</strong> Tupelo, Coach Nathan McLellenis a graduate <strong>of</strong> East Union and Ole Miss, andhe began his six-year coaching career in 2006.He was instrumental in starting <strong>the</strong> East Uniontrack and field program and has guided hisUrchins and Lady Urchins to four UnionCounty meet championships, nine region anddistrict titles, two state runner-up finishes andthree Class 2A cross country state championships,including <strong>the</strong> 2009 boys’ title and backto-backgirls’ crowns in 2010 and 2011. Coach McLellen was alsonamed <strong>the</strong> Boys’ Cross Country Coach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year by <strong>the</strong> NFHSand <strong>the</strong> MAC in 2010.Boys’ TrackWillie Thomas, West Bolivar High SchoolA Rosedale native and graduate <strong>of</strong> RosedaleHigh and Delta State, Willie was a superbtrack star in high school and college and wasa four-time MVP <strong>of</strong> his track teams. He hasspent his 29-year coaching career at WestBolivar High and has received 25 Coach <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Year awards for basketball and track. Hehas guided his Eagles girls’ track teams to threestate titles and his boys’ thincladders to threestate championships, including <strong>the</strong> recent 2012Class 2A state crown. During his career, Coach Thomas has led hisWest Bolivar track teams in 1,876 meets with 1,640 wins and only236 losses. In addition to his duties on <strong>the</strong> track, Willie has coached<strong>the</strong> Eagle boys’ basketball team to a record <strong>of</strong> 520–281, including2 North state titles, 2 state runner-up finishes and <strong>the</strong> 2010 Class2A state championship.Girls’ Powerlifting and Girls’ TrackJeff Hollingsworth, Charleston High SchoolFor <strong>the</strong> second straight year, Charleston’sJeff Hollingsworth has been named <strong>the</strong> Girls’Powerlifting Coach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year by <strong>the</strong> MAC.In addition, <strong>the</strong> MAC has selected CoachHollingsworth as <strong>the</strong> Girls’ Track Coach <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Year. A native <strong>of</strong> Charleston and a graduate<strong>of</strong> Strider Academy and Delta State,Coach Hollingsworth is an eight-year coachingveteran and has coached every sport <strong>of</strong>feredat Charleston High. In just 4 seasons, CoachHollingsworth has led <strong>the</strong> Lady Tiger lifters to a sparkling 20–2mark. Under his guidance in girls’ powerlifting, Charleston hascaptured a state runner-up finish, three North Half championshipsand three consecutive Class 1A state championships. CoachHollingsworth’s Lady Tiger track team claimed <strong>the</strong>ir third straightNorth state crown and <strong>the</strong>n won <strong>the</strong> 2012 Class 3A girls’ track statechampionship. His 2011 Lady Tiger thincladders were also <strong>the</strong>state runners-up in <strong>the</strong> girls’ state track meet. Coach Hollingsworthhas also coached <strong>the</strong> Tiger girls’ basketball team to a district title.Along with <strong>the</strong> back-to-back and dual MAC honors this year, hewas named <strong>the</strong> girls’ basketball Coach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year for Region 3-3Aby <strong>the</strong> MHSAA in 2008 and 2012.Boys’ PowerliftingTyrone Varnado, South Pike High SchoolFor <strong>the</strong> second consecutive year, Coach TyroneVarnado <strong>of</strong> South Pike has been selected as<strong>the</strong> MAC Boys’ Powerlifting Coach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Year. He hails from McComb, where he wasan honor student and superb athlete at SouthPike before receiving his college degrees atAlcorn State. An 11-year coaching veteran,Coach Varnado has been at South Pike since2001. Since his arrival, he has guided <strong>the</strong> Eaglepowerlifting squads to eight regional crowns,nine South state titles and four state championships in 2006, 2008,2011 and 2012. Along with his two MAC consecutive awards, CoachVarnado was also named Coach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year by <strong>the</strong> South PikeSchool District in 2006 and by <strong>the</strong> MHSAA and NFHS in 2008.Boys’ GolfMichael Gray, Baldwyn High SchoolThis year, Coach Michael Gray coached<strong>the</strong> Baldwyn Bearcats to <strong>the</strong>ir third straightClass 2A state golf championship. A native<strong>of</strong> Baldwyn, he was a multi-letter winner infootball, baseball and basketball at BaldwynHigh and was named to <strong>the</strong> All-DecadeBaldwyn football team for <strong>the</strong> 1980s. At MC, heplayed tennis for <strong>the</strong> Choctaws, was namedto <strong>the</strong> Gulf South Conference All Conferencesquad in 1996 and received a specialMC Coaches award. Coach Wall began his15-year coaching career at South Pike, wherehe first coached in <strong>the</strong> middle school beforeleading <strong>the</strong> varsity linksters. He has been atNorth Pike since 2007 and guided his 2012 Lady Jaguars to a 3rdplace finish in <strong>the</strong> Class II state golf championships.Boys’ SoccerBrian Bennett, Starkville High SchoolCoach Brian Bennett hails from Starkville,where he was a 1991 Soccer Scholar Athleteat Starkville High, and he received his collegedegree from Mississippi State. A 14-yearcoaching veteran, Coach Bennett has spenthis entire coaching career at Starkville High.His Yellowjacket boys’ soccer teams have anoverall record <strong>of</strong> 160 wins, 83 losses and 20ties and captured <strong>the</strong> 2012 Class 5A boys’soccer state championship. Coach Bennettwas also named <strong>the</strong> Mississippi Coach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year by <strong>the</strong> MississippiYouth Soccer Association in 2001.Girls’ SoccerCeleste Bramlett, Brandon High SchoolA native <strong>of</strong> Jackson, Coach Celeste Bramlettwas an All-State soccer and s<strong>of</strong>tball athlete atBrandon High. She moved on to Hinds CC,where she was a two-time NJCAA All Regionand Academic All-American and was namedto <strong>the</strong> 1998 NJCAA All-American team. Shebegan her 9-year coaching career at Brandonin 2003, and she has guided <strong>the</strong> Lady Bulldogsoccer team to a record <strong>of</strong> 62–22–8 ties in her4 seasons as head coach. Coach Bramlett hasled Brandon to three division crowns and <strong>the</strong> 2012 Class 6A statechampionship. She was also named girls’ soccer Coach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yearby <strong>the</strong> Jackson Clarion-Ledger, and she is a three-time districtCoach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year for 2009, 2011 and 2012.TennisLynn Ogden, St. Joseph (Madison) High SchoolCoach Lynn Ogden hails from Natchez andgraduated from South Natchez High, TexasWoman’s University and Indiana University.Her coaching career spans 13 years, beginningin 1976 at J. T. Wright High in Mobile,Alabama. After leading her team to anAlabama state tennis crown, she returnedto Natchez in 1997 to lead Ca<strong>the</strong>dral to twoClass 1A state championships in 1998 and1999. Coach Ogden’s netters have combinedfor 118 victories, with only 31 losses, and have won 6 state championships,including an amazing 3 in a row in 2010, 2011 and 2012by Madison St. Joseph’s Lady Bruins.VolleyballRobbie Veazey, Lewisburg High SchoolCoach Robbie Veazey paced <strong>the</strong> LewisburgHigh Lady Patriots volleyball squad to <strong>the</strong>irsecond consecutive volleyball state championship.A native <strong>of</strong> Memphis, Robbie was astar basketball and volleyball player at SBECin Southaven and graduated from MUW.Coaching since 1999, she previously workedat Horn Lake and SBEC. Coach Veazeyguided <strong>the</strong> 2011 Lady Patriots to <strong>the</strong> ChickasawConference title and <strong>the</strong> Class I statevolleyball crown, making Lewisburg back-to-back state champions.Overall, she has led her volleyball squads to a record <strong>of</strong> 95–33.
