Message from the Principal
Information Technology in the Classroom
Thursday, 8th March, 2012
The little genius smiled as he collected his award. He was a proud student and he felt even more
satisfied as his mum looked on. “This award goes to Derlerean, for being independent in his work. As a
new student, Derlerean is learning the class routines, and particularly did a great job of writing his name
all by himself”, Mrs Beelitz explained.
Whether it’s writing your name, remembering to do your homework, packing your bag without being
told, or eating all of your tea, independence is a skill that comes with maturity and improved
organisation. For our students to do something by themselves for the first time is a big thing that only
happens with a certain amount of confidence.
Below are some suggested tips on how to teach kids to be independent:
1 Give the kids some responsibility. Ask your children to complete a few age and skill appropriate chores around the house.
Show them how to do the tasks correctly, then step back and let them complete the jobs and gain a sense of
independence.
2 Help your kids figure out a problem instead of stepping in and solving it for them. Ask things like, "How would you handle
this situation?" Give them guidance and the tools to solve problems themselves.
3 Let your kids fail once in a while. Yes, this is incredibly difficult. But kids need to know what failure feels like and how to
deal with it.
4 Build routines. Make every night the same at bedtime and soon your kids will find their independence and complete tasks
without you having to tell them.
5 Be there for support when your kids need it and let them know you believe in them. You can be a support for your kids
through the tough times and empower them by saying how much confidence you have in their judgment and abilities.
We pray:
Dear God, we ask that you give us wisdom and understanding as we undertake the important job of bringing up our kids.
Give us the strength to keep on challenging our children, so that they learn from us the important skills of life. We pray that
you will lead us in this important task, Amen.
Have a great week everyone – Adam.
The students across the school
have been utilising the mobile
MacBook Computer Lab, using
them to enhance their learning,
particularly for researching
their current Unit of Inquiry.
Congratulations
Mrs Shugg
Congratulations to Mrs Jane Shugg on
completing her Certificate III in Education
Support. Mrs Shugg has decided to
undertake a Certificate IV this year.
Corner Corner of of Peace
Peace
Often, in our society, we hear comments about inequities and unfairness. These comments are often made with
passion, and frequently with sadness. Quite likely, it may be you or I who make these comments ourselves.
We may bemoan the fact that a person who put out every effort to better their family’s life, but is still battling on, is not
accorded the same level of assistance that is given to some-one who is living an idle, dissolute lifestyle. However true this
may be, we forget that, here in Australia, there is always at least some level of assistance. In many countries this is not the
case. This being so, I personally find it helps to look for the positive side of the picture as well as the negative. Viewing the
negatives alone tend to tear down rather than build up.
Inequities have been a part of society since history began. Mankind, has the tendency to selfishness, usually resulting in
unfairness.
The prophet Habakkuk, in fact, was bothered by this very thing – just as we are today. He, however, took his problem to God.
Perhaps we should too – voicing our thoughts and feeling to God is really the best thing we can do. We may be surprised,
(and frequently comforted too), at the answers we receive. At times these answers come from most unexpected places. Habakkuk
was very privileged to receive his answers directly from God and he wrote them down for us to read in the book that
bears his name in the Bible.
We can be reassured that God notices and has his own perfect timetable for action – but it is not our time-table. We have
short vision and God sees the long term we cannot yet perceive. It is true that God sometimes has a ‘hands off’ policy which
is, in fact, very much desired by many in our society. We really need to remind ourselves that this is because God does
respect and allow free will.
God will make all things new in His own perfect timing – we can be assured of that.
God bless and keep you all.
