ICAS Congratulations Congratulations to Ashley Ebert on achieving a Distinction in the ICAS Computer Skills Competition. Ashley’s certificate will be presented at Assembly, next Monday, 23rd July. Upcoming ICAS Competitions The English competition will be held on Tuesday, 31 July 2012 and the Maths competition will be held on Tuesday 14th August 2012. Pink Lady Apples We have locally grown Pink Lady Apples available for purchase from the office for $2 per bag. Nut Allergies Just a reminder that we do have students with severe nut allergies at Waikerie Lutheran. Could you please ensure that no food items with nuts in them (ie Peanut Butter, Nutella) are sent along with your child to school. Thank you for helping us to keep our students safe. Rocky Rocky Road Road 2 x blocks milk cooking chocolate ½ cup peanut butter 1 packet Turkish delight, chopped 1 packet mini marshmallows Line a slice tin with foil. Melt chocolate and peanut butter together. Pour a thin layer of chocolate over the base of tin. Scatter all marshmallows and Turkish delight over chocolate base. Pour over remaining chocolate and shake to cover. Refrigerate until firm. Enjoy!! We raised $473.10 which is a fantastic effort!! Next Next Next Next Meeting Meeting Meeting Meeting The next P&F Meeting will be held this Friday, 20th July commencing at 9:00am in the Library. New members always welcome!! In a recent radio interview promoting my new book Thriving!, the presenter asked me to sum up Thriving! parenting in just 3 words. That was a hard one! The following three words just tumbled out of my mouth and explanations are under each. Perhaps, you can use these words sometime when you are trying to get the good parenting message across succinctly. Word 1: With It's what parents do with kids that is important rather than what they do for them. A great deal of effective parenting is done by osmosis or mimicry. Many parents do far too much for their kids rather than standing back, and allowing their kids to become independent. The act of helping kids become independent requires parents to do some teaching, which is when the ‘with’ comes in! Word 2: Big Today’s families are very small, which means parents have a great propensity to spoil and overprotect kids. The solution is to raise small families using big family mindsets. That means parents need to work toward redundancy and spend time teaching kids how to behave well and how to handle some of the tricky situations they may encounter. They become masters of the teachable moment! Word 3: Benign Families are tricky to lead. They work well when they are benign dictatorships or guided democracies. Parents don't have to use the authoritarian methods of the past, but they do need to make sure someone is in charge in their families. It's best if it's parents! I hope you find these helpful.
