Message Message from from the the the Principal

Welcome back to the start of Term 3. I hope that God blessed the time our
students were able to share with their families and friends over the
holidays and have returned to school ready for the term ahead! It is a
biblical principle that we need to be balanced in our lives – in our work,
rest and play! (Genesis 2:3 – God rests on the Seventh Day).
Term 3 promises to be a great one, full of activity and learning. Yesterday,
after chapel, the Year 4/5 and 6/7 classes headed off with Mrs Waterson
and Mrs Burns on camp to Swan Reach. We thank the parent helpers that we have
attending camp, and wish them a safe and prosperous time of learning at Illawonga.
Outdoor Education is an essential part of our curriculum at WLPS, and provides our students
with invaluable opportunities in a diverse educational setting.
A special welcome to our four new reception students starting with us this term! Last term
these students fit in so well to their new classroom environment with Mrs Beelitz, Mrs
Mason and the reception class. We know they will fit in so well to school life this term.
We also welcome Ashton Hart and his family, Vicar Perry, his wife Tara, and family. The
Harts’ have moved to Waikerie from Canada. We wish Vicar Perry God’s blessings as he
starts work as the pastor of Waikerie Lutheran Parish, and pray that the Hart family feel
welcome in our community.

“A 'beautiful smile and rugged good looks' helped land a local teacher and
star athlete the title of Mr Waikerie 2012.” (Quote from the River News)
On Sunday, 8th July, our very own Reception/Year 1 Teacher, Mr Steven
Braun, took part in the finals of the Mr Waikerie competition alongside 12
other contestants. The contestants were put through a rigorous question
and answer session, a “fashion” parade as well as a show of skill. After the
results were finalized, it was announced that Mr Steven Braun, Waikerie
Lutheran Primary School R/1 teacher, local footballer, basketballer and
tennis player etc was the 2012 Mr Waikerie winner.
"I didn’t expect this at all... I’m very happy to get the honour," he said
following the announcement.
This win closely follows Mr Braun’s selection into the State team following
the SA Country Football Championships in Berri. As part of his selection in
the State team, Mr Braun will be away from school from Wednesday 18th
July and will return to the classroom on Tuesday, 24th July. We pray that
God will keep him safe during his time away from us.

ICAS Congratulations
Congratulations to Ashley Ebert on achieving
a Distinction in the ICAS Computer Skills
Competition. Ashley’s certificate will be
presented at Assembly, next Monday, 23rd July.
Upcoming ICAS Competitions
The English competition will be held on Tuesday,
31 July 2012 and the Maths competition will be
held on Tuesday 14th August 2012.
Pink Lady Apples
We have locally grown Pink Lady Apples available
for purchase from the office for $2 per bag.
Nut Allergies
Just a reminder that we do have students
with severe nut allergies at Waikerie
Lutheran. Could you please ensure that no
food items with nuts in them (ie Peanut Butter, Nutella)
are sent along with your child to school. Thank you for
helping us to keep our students safe.
Discovery Club
Discovery club is on again this term,
commencing on Friday, 27th July 2012. If you
would like your child to attend Discovery Club
via the school bus, please fill in the attached form and
return it to school.

Congratulations to Kelly, Stephen, Courtney and
Alicia Wood on the new addition to their family -
a little boy - Alexander. We pray that God will
continue to watch over your family.
Farewell
We would like to extend our farewell and
blessings to the Labuschagne family upon their
relocation to W.A. Good-bye - we will miss you.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
Last year we obtained a completion rate of
93% for the Premier’s Reading Challenge and
this year we would like to achieve an even

2 x blocks milk cooking chocolate
½ cup peanut butter
1 packet Turkish delight, chopped
1 packet mini marshmallows
Line a slice tin with foil.
Melt chocolate and peanut butter together.
Pour a thin layer of chocolate over the base of tin.
Scatter all marshmallows and Turkish delight over
chocolate base.
Pour over remaining chocolate and shake to cover.
Refrigerate until firm. Enjoy!!

In a recent radio interview promoting my new book Thriving!, the presenter asked me to sum up Thriving! parenting in
just 3 words. That was a hard one!
The following three words just tumbled out of my mouth and explanations are under each. Perhaps, you
can use these words sometime when you are trying to get the good parenting message across succinctly.
Word 1: With
It's what parents do with kids that is important rather than what they do for them. A great deal of effective
parenting is done by osmosis or mimicry.
Many parents do far too much for their kids rather than standing back, and allowing their kids to become independent.
The act of helping kids become independent requires parents to do some teaching, which is when the ‘with’ comes in!
Word 2: Big
Today’s families are very small, which means parents have a great propensity to spoil and overprotect kids. The
solution is to raise small families using big family mindsets. That means parents need to work toward redundancy and
spend time teaching kids how to behave well and how to handle some of the tricky situations they may encounter.
They become masters of the teachable moment!
Word 3: Benign
Families are tricky to lead. They work well when they are benign dictatorships or guided democracies. Parents don't
have to use the authoritarian methods of the past, but they do need to make sure someone is in charge in their
families. It's best if it's parents!

Dear Parents,
Discovery Club
Discovery Club is on again at the Waikerie Social Centre on Friday 29th July
from 3:45pm until 5:00pm.
Discovery Club is a time when children aged 5-12 can listen to God’s Word,
be involved in craft activities and games and have fun. There is no cost
involved and children are supplied afternoon tea. It would be wonderful if
your child/children could come.
We will be using the school bus to transport students from school to the Social
Centre. For this week the Parish Discovery Club fund is paying for the bus. Tim
Hensel will be riding on the bus with the students and Robert Kalisch will be
driving the bus. During Discovery Club there will be several adults assisting
Tim, including Corrin Dubrich, Lorraine Fechner and Sharon Perry.
