FROM THE DIRECTOR 1The Baylor Sammons Cancer Center has reached its31st birthday. We continue to emphasize multidisciplinarypersonalized care for our patients. During thelast decade, overall cancer mortality has declinedthrough better detection methods and improvedtreatment. Advances in molecular biology, genetics,and immunology have identified new pathways whichmake targeted therapy to the cancer cell increasinglyeffective. Oncology has become one of the most excitingfields in medicine, in large part because progressin the basic sciences is being translated to the bedsideand clinic at an ever accelerating rate.The linchpin of Sammons Cancer Center activities continues to be our MultidisciplinarySite-Tumor Conferences. This year we have instituted an Endocrine Site-Tumor Conferenceto bring the total number of different site conferences to 12. Two hundred forty such conferencesare held each year. In 2007 over 800 patients were discussed at these conferences bySurgeons, Medical Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, Pathologists, and other specialists.The total attendance at the Sammons Site-Tumor Conferences has now passed 6,000annually. I know of no other center or institution that conducts a similar scope of regularmultidisciplinary cancer conferences.In the following pages you will find much new information about our activities. Researchand educational programs continue to expand. Over 200 clinical trials are available for ourpatients. Advances in prevention, detection and treatment are being refined and promptlytranslated to patient care. Oncology is an ever changing discipline, principally due to thefact that rapid increase in knowledge is being made in many areas. Targeted therapy formany types of cancer is already being employed and will surely expand in the near future.The consequence will be better outcomes for our patients.Marvin J.
