Portable MetersPortableMetersThe hand held meter is a sophisticatedinstrument and incorporates many usefulfeatures not found in a pocket tester. Handheldinstruments are also more durable andhave a longer useful life than pocket testers. If your major concern is cost and good basicperformance, then the pocket tester may bethe right fit for your needs. If increased accuracy, durability and additional features areimportant in your measurements, then ahand held instrument is a better choice inthe long run. The following are our rugged, waterproof pH meters, with various featuresto meet every need.p HpH has an incredible impact on the healthof aquatic plants and animals. As pHincreases, so does the percentage ofammonia in its more toxic unionized form.Ammonia excretion is also impaired athigher pH, limiting an organism’s ability topurge itself of its waste product. KeepingpH stable and in optimal range reducesstress on your fish and aquatic animals, helping them resist disease and tolerateother stressors. Maintaining an ideal pHcan dramatically improve growth, behaviorand overall appearance.ORPORP stands for Oxidation-ReductionPotential. It is also sometimes known asthe Redox Potential. Very simply put, it isthe ability of the water to cleanse itself bybreaking down contaminants. For example,if one put a piece of iron in a swimmingpool, it would rust. This is a form of oxidation:the oxygen from the water and the chlorinereacts with the iron, causing it to breakdown into rust. The same process occurswhen an oxidizing agent like chlorine orozone comes in contact with bacteria andother microbes; instead of rusting, they aredestroyed or decomposed.8HI 98180 • HI 98181Graphic LCD pH MetersHANNA instruments ®• Calibration Check: pH electrode condition, clean electrode/contaminated buffer warning, outside calibration range warning• 0.001 pH resolution• Stainless steel pH electrode with built-in temperature sensor• Up to 3 calibration points with standard or custom buffers• Relative mV scaleThese instruments have many innovative features, including: rechargeable batteries (alkalinebatteries can also be used), inductive recharging (with a 115v standard outlet or a 12V caradapter), our exclusive Calibration Check (electrode status), a 128 X 64 pixel graphic LCD, andcomprehensive Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). Inother words, ORP can be usedas an indicator of water quality. Many consider an ORP level of250-400 mV to be reflective ofgood to optimal water quality;this level can be maintained byusing aeration, ozone, or a UVsterilizer. ORP levels below 200mV can indicate low dissolvedoxygen, high nitrites, or highDOC (Dissolved OrganicCarbon). DOC promotes theincrease of harmful bacteria. However, ORP levels exceeding550 mV are harmful to animalsand plants. Levels this highshould only be used as a sterilizingagent to treat water thatcontains no live stock.HI 9026 Calibration Check SystemClean ElectrodeEach time pH calibration isperformed, the meter internallycompares the newcalibration with the onepreviously stored. Portable MetersHI 9024 • HI 9025pH and pH/ORP Meterswith Temperature• Specialized electrode• High accuracy• Fast response• Automatic temperaturecompensationConductivityConductivity (EC) is a measure of the ability ofwater to pass an electrical current.Conductivity in water is affected by the presenceof inorganic dissolved solids such aschloride, nitrate, sulfate, and phosphateanions (ions that carry a negative charge) orsodium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and aluminumcations (ions that carry a positivecharge). These are called Total DissolvedSolids (TDS). Conductivity is also affected bytemperature: the warmer the water, the higherthe conductivity. For this reason, conductivityis reported as conductivity at 25 degreesCelsius (25 °C). Our waterproof conductivityand total dissolved solids meters have manyapplications, such as:This family of pH meters feature manual or automatic temperature compensation with separatepH and temperature probes. Portable MetersdissolvedoxygenArguably the most importantparameter of water quality. Most species require a minimumof 3 ppm DO, 8-10 ppmis preferable. Unlike othergases such as nitrogen, oxygensupersaturation doesn’tusually result in gas bubbledisease (“pop-eye”), so highlevels generally aren’t anissue. Most of the meters listedhere are waterproof andcome with probes that can bereplaced by the user. Thatmeans there’s no need toreplace the entire meter orsend the unit in for costlyservicing if the probe or cablegets damaged. Simply twistoff the old cable, twist onthe new one, calibrate and go!All but one of the modelsfeatured here also comeequipped with automaticcalibration in air (at 100%),which means there are nocalibration screws, eliminatinga source of vapor infiltrationand prolonging the life ofthe meter.DO Levels at 100% SaturationTankTipSalinity (ppt)Temperature 0 10 20 30 4010 C / 50 F 13.0 12.2 11.4 10.6 9.815C / 59 F 10.3 9.7 9.2 8.6 8.120 C / 68 F 9.4 8.8 8.4 7.9 7.425 C / 77 F 8.5 8.0 7.6 7.2 6.730 C / 86 F 7.8 7.4 7.0 6.6 6.2Salt water at 75°F will containapproximately 6.8ppm (mg/L) of DO at 100%saturation.
