St<strong>and</strong>ards of <strong>School</strong> Nursing <strong>Practice</strong>And Professional PerformanceThe St<strong>and</strong>ards of <strong>School</strong> Nursing <strong>Practice</strong> <strong>and</strong> their accompanying measurement criteria describe<strong>and</strong> measure a competent level of school nursing practice <strong>and</strong> professional performance. Builton American <strong>Nurse</strong>s Association’s Nursing: Scope <strong>and</strong> St<strong>and</strong>ards of <strong>Practice</strong> (ANA, 2004) forregistered nurses, these st<strong>and</strong>ards are authoritative statements of the accountability, direction,<strong>and</strong> evaluation of individuals in this special nursing practice. Composed of two sets – theSt<strong>and</strong>ards of <strong>Practice</strong> <strong>and</strong> the St<strong>and</strong>ards of Professional Performance – these st<strong>and</strong>ards definehow outcomes for school nurse activities can be measured.The St<strong>and</strong>ards of <strong>Practice</strong> reflect the six steps of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis,outcomes identification, implementation, planning <strong>and</strong> evaluation), which is the foundation forthe critical thinking of all registered nurses. The St<strong>and</strong>ards of Professional Performance describethe behaviors expected of the nurse in the role of a school nurse. AssessmentThe school nurse collects comprehensive data pertinent to the client’s health or the situation.St<strong>and</strong>ard 2. DiagnosisThe school nurse analyzes the assessment data to determine the diagnosis or issues.St<strong>and</strong>ard 3. Outcomes IdentificationThe school nurse identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the client or thesituation.St<strong>and</strong>ard 4. PlanningThe school nurse develops a plan that prescribes strategies <strong>and</strong> alternatives to attain expectedoutcomes.St<strong>and</strong>ard 5. ImplementationThe school nurse implements the identified plan.St<strong>and</strong>ard 5A: Coordination of CareThe school nurse coordinates care delivery.St<strong>and</strong>ard 5B: Health Teaching <strong>and</strong> Health PromotionThe school nurse provides health education <strong>and</strong> employs strategies to promote health <strong>and</strong>a safe environment.St<strong>and</strong>ard 5C: ConsultationThe school nurse provides consultation to influence the identified plan, enhance theabilities of others, <strong>and</strong> effect change.9
