Table 4.20 shows the distribution of sterilized women by the age atwhich they had the procedure, according to the number of years prior to the survey the procedure was done.It should be noted that, since data on age at sterilization were derived from a question on the month <strong>and</strong> yearof the operation, it is possible that the data are distorted by some systematic error in reporting the date of theoperation or the date of birth <strong>and</strong>/or age of the woman.The data show that female sterilization occurs relatively early in women's reproductive lives. Fullytwo-thirds of the women sterilized had the operation before age 30 <strong>and</strong> one-third had it before they were age25. Only a small fraction of sterilized women had the operation when they were in their 40s. The medianage at sterilization is 27. There has been little change in the median age at which women have the operation.57
