Despite the fluctuations between surveys, the data generally showonly modest declines until the mid- 1980s. Between 1985 and 1989, the decline in mean number of childrenever born was substantial in all but the youngest and oldest age groups. Although there was then little changebelween 1989 and 1991, the rates again decline considerably between 1991 and 1993-94, especially amongwomen age 25 and above.Table 3.10 Trends in children ever bornMean number of children ever bom by age group, selected sources, Bangladesh, 1975-19941975 1981 1983 1985 1989 1989 1991 1993-94Age group BFS CPS CPS CPS BFS CPS CPS BDHS15-19 0.6 0.5 0.6 0.4 0.4 0.4 0.4 0.320-24 2.3 2.0 2.2 2.0 1.7 1.8 1.7 1.625-29 4.2 3.7 3.8 3.6 3.1 3.3 3.2 2.930-34 5.7 5.4 5.5 5.1 4.7 4.7 4.5 4.135-39 6.7 6.4 6.5 6.5 5.9 5.9 5.7 5.240-44 7.1 7.3 7.4 7.4 6.6 7.0 6.7 6.445-49 6.7 7.6 7.5 7.2 7.3 7.5 7.4 6.9Total U U U U U U 3.5 3.0U = Unknown (not available)Source: 1983 and 1985 CPSs (Kanmer and Frankenberg, 1988:21); 1991 CPS (Mitra et al., t993:31); allothers (Cleland et al., 1994:11)33
