Although Chittagong Division had the highestfertility in the mid-1980s and still does today, the rate of declinein fertility is almost identical with that of the other divisions.Table 3.6 shows the proportion of currently marriedwomen who reported that they were pregnant at the time ofsurvey, according to age group. These data are useful because, while fertility rates depend to some extent on accuratereporting of dates of events, the proportion pregnant is a"current status" indicator. Change over time in the percentpregnant is an independent indicator of fertility change. InBangladesh, the proportion pregnant has generally declinedover time, although not in a steady fashion. In the 1975BFS, 13 percent of currently married women were reportedto be pregnant at the time of the survey. By 1989, this proportionhad declined to 9 percent; it then increased to 11 percentin 1991, and again declined to 9 percent in the 1993-94BDHS. Although it is entirely possible that such fluctuationsare real, misreporting may also be a factor.Table 3.5 Trends in fertility by divisionTotal fertility rates by dwision and percent ofchange from the period 1984-88 to 1991-93,Bangladesh, 1989 BFS and 1993-94 BDHS1989 1993-94BFS BDHSPercentDivision 1984-88 1991-93 changeChittagong 5.94 3.95 -34Dhaka 5.18 3.45 -33Khulna I 4.71 3.20 -32Rajshahi 4.60 3.03 -34Note: Rates for the 1989 BFS refer to the 5-yearperiod preceding the survey, while those for the1993-94 BDHS refer to the 3-year periodpreceding the survey.
