for the whole country is 29 births per 1,000 population. This is somewhat lower than the rate of 31 reportedby the government's sample vital registration system for 1992 (BBS, 1993:87), but is slightly higher than therate of 28 per 1,000 reported for a 1994 survey (BBS, 1994:5).Fertility is higher in rural areas than in urban areas (see Figure 3.1), a pattern that has persisted invarious censuses and demographic surveys that have been carried out in Bangladesh (Huq and Cleland,1990:106; Mitra et al., 1993:36). The difference is especially large at ages 15-19, which reflects longereducation and later marriage of women in urban areas. The total fertility rate is estimated at 3.5 in rural areas, about 30 percent higher than that in the urban areas (2.7).Table 3.1 Current fertilityAge-spocific and cumulative fertility rates and thecrude birth rate for the three years preceding thesurvey, by urban-rural residence, Bangladesh1993-94ResidenceAge group Urban Rural Total15-19 81 148 14020-24 178 198 19625-29 134 161 15830-34 82 108 10535-39 41 58 5640-44 4 21 1945-49 (17) 14 14TFR 15-49 2.69 3.54 3.44TFR 15-44 2.60 3.47 3.37GFR 106 140 136CBR 25.3 29.5 29.1Note: Rates are for the period 1-36 monthspreceding the survey.
