CHAPTER 2CHARACTERISTICS OF HOUSEHOLDS AND RESPONDENTSThe purpose of this chapter is to provide a short descriptive summary of some socioeconomiccharacteristics of the household population and the individual survey respondents, such as: age, sex, residenceand educational level. Also examined are environmental conditions such as housing facilities and householdcharacteristics. This information on the characteristics of the households and the individual womeninterviewed is essential for the interpretation of survey findings and can provide an approximate indicationof the representativeness of the survey.2.1 Characteristics of the Household PopulationIn the BDHS, information was collected about all usual residents and visitors who had spent theprevious night in the selected household. This approach makes it possible to distinguish between the de jurepopulation (those usually resident in the household) from the de facto population (those who spent the nightbefore the interview in the household). A household was defined as a person or group of people who livetogether and share food.Age and SexThe distribution of the household population in the BDHS is shown in Table 2.1 by five-year agegroups, according to sex and urban-rural residence. Because of relatively high levels of fertility in the past,Bangladesh has a larger proportion of its population in the younger age groups than in the older age groups,Table 2.1 Household population by age T residence and sexPercent distribution of the de facto household population and sex ratios by five-year age groups, according tourban-rural residence and sex, Bangladesh 1993-94Urban Rural TotalAge Sex Sex Sexgroup Male Female Total ratio Male Female Total ratio Male Female Total ratio0-4 11.5 11.7 11.6 99.4 14,1 13.4 13.7 105.1 13.8 13,2 13.5 104.55-9 13.0 13.3 13.1 99.6 15.7 15.5 15.6 101.1 15.4 15.2 15.3 100.910-14 14.4 14.7 14.6 99.3 13.9 13.6 13.8 101.8 14.0 13.8 13.9 101.515-19 9.7 11.9 10.8 82.3 9.4 10.6 10.0 88.3 9,4 10.7 10.1 87.520-24 9.9 11.9 10.9 84.9 7.8 9.7 8.8 80.4 8.1 10.0 9.0 81.125-29 8.8 9.3 9.0 96.0 6.6 8.5 7.6 78.4 6.9 8.6 7.7 80.530-34 7.3 6.5 6.9 114.9 6.5 6.1 6.3 106.1 6.6 6.2 6.4 107.235-39 7.3 5.4 6.4 135.9 5.9 5.0 5.5 117.2 6.1 5.1 5.6 119.540-44 4.6 4.3 4.4 108.1 4.2 3.6 3.9 114.1 4.2 3.7 4.0 113.345-49 3.4 3.0 3,2 116.0 3.7 2.7 3.2 134.8 3.7 2.8 3.2 132.550-54 3.3 2.3 2,8 147.0 2.8 3.1 3.0 87.5 2.8 3.1 2.9 92.655-59 2.3 1.8 2.0 134.2 2.2 2.4 2.3 90.5 2.2 2.3 2.3 94.260-64 1,8 1.5 1.6 119,2 2.1 2.4 2.3 87.6 2.1 2.3 2.2 89.965-69 I,I 1.0 1.I I 11.1 1.8 1.2 1.5 151.8 1.7 1.2 1.4 147.770-74 0.8 0.6 0.7 135.9 1.7 0.9 1.3 193.5 1.6 0.8 1.2 188,775-79 0.4 0.3 0.3 105.5 0.7 0.4 0.6 174.0 0.7 0.4 0,5 167.480+ 0.6 0.4 0.5 t28.5 1.0 0.8 0.9 127.1 0.9 0.7 0.8 127.2Total I00.0 I00,0 I00.0 101,7 I00.0 I00.0 100.0 99.8 100.0 I00.0 I00.0 IO0.0Number 2830 2783 5612 5612 21608 21646 43254 43254 24438 24428 48866 488669
