PREFACEI am pleased to introduce the final report of the <strong>Bangladesh</strong> <strong>Demographic</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Survey(B<strong>DHS</strong>), <strong>1993</strong>-94.The B<strong>DHS</strong> is the first of this kind of study conducted in <strong>Bangladesh</strong>. It provides rapid feedback onkey demographic <strong>and</strong> programmatic indicators to monitor the strengths <strong>and</strong> weaknesses of the national familyplanning/MCH program. The wealth of information collected through the <strong>1993</strong>-94 B <strong>DHS</strong> will be of immensevalue to the policymakers <strong>and</strong> program managers in order to strengthen future program policies <strong>and</strong> strategies.The Technical Review Committee t'TRC) was composed of members with professional expertise inthe field of population/family planning research. Its membership was drawn from the Govemment, nongovernmentalorganizations, donor agencies <strong>and</strong> individual researchers. The professional contribution of theTRC members in major phases of the study helped to ensure the collection of relevant information that isneeded to highlight the present status of programs <strong>and</strong> to provide future program directions.The preliminary results of the <strong>1993</strong>-94 B<strong>DHS</strong>, with its major findings, were released in a disseminationseminar held in July <strong>1994</strong>.
