Fifty-five percent of husb<strong>and</strong>s (versus 45 percent of currently married women) said that they werecurrently using a method of family planning at the time of the survey (see Table 9.4). 2 The principalmethods husb<strong>and</strong>s report are the pill (23 percent), female sterilization, (9 percent), <strong>and</strong> periodic abstinence(8 percen0. Use of the pill prevails among all but the oldest groups of husb<strong>and</strong>s; those over age 50 are morelikely to be relying on female sterilization than on the pill. Contraceptive use among husb<strong>and</strong>s is higher inurban than rural areas (63 vs. 54 percen0. It is also highest among husb<strong>and</strong>s in Khulna <strong>and</strong> RajshahiDivisions <strong>and</strong> lowest in Chittagong <strong>and</strong> Dhaka Divisions. Secondly, husb<strong>and</strong>swere asked about contraceptive use in general <strong>and</strong> not specifically with their wives, thus, the data from husb<strong>and</strong>s couldtheoretically include extra-marital contraceptive use.123
