Figure 8.4Percentage of Children under 3 Who Received Various Treatmentsfor Diarrhea in the Two Weeks Preceding the SurveyTaken to Health F a c l l i t y ~ 20ORS Packet 50Increased FluidsPill/Syrupr~n51InjectionHome Remedy R 1 110 20 30 40 50Percent60BDHS 1993-94include ORS, RHF, and increased fluids, then 72 percent of children with diarrhea received some sort of oralrehydration treatment; 28 percent did not receive ORS, recommended home fluid, or increased fluids. Fortypercent of children with diarrhea were given some kind of pill or syrup to treat the disease, while 11 percentwere given home remedies or herbs. About one in six children with diarrhea was given nothing to treat thediarrhea.Children age 6-11 months are more likely to be taken to health facilities when they have diarrhea thanolder or younger children. These children are also more likely to be given a recommended home fluid (i.e.,sugar-salt-water solution) as treatment for their diarrhea. Children under age 6 months are not only the leastlikely to be taken to health facilities when they have diarrhea, but are also least likely to be treated with ORSpackets, recommended home fluid, or increased fluids of any kind. Male children with diarrhea are no morelikely than female children to be taken to a health facility; however, they are more likely to be treated withORS packets. A higher proportion of first-born children are taken to health facilities when they have diarrheathan children of higher birth orders, but otherwise, treatment differentials by birth order are minimal. The data indicate some differences in the treatment of diarrhea cases by urban-rural residence. Notonly are urban children with diarrhea more likely than rural children to be taken to a health facility, but theyare also more likely to receive ORS fluid, recommended home fluid, and increased fluids of any kind. The proportion of children with diarrhea who are taken to health facilities is highest in Barisal andRajshahi Divisions and lowest in Dhaka Division. Children in Rajshahi and Barisal Divisions are also morelikely to be given ORS fluid when they have diarrhea. Homemade fluids for treating diarrhea appear to bemuch more commonly used in Rajshahi and Dhaka Divisions than in the other divisions.114
