If the mother was assisted by more thanone type of provider, only the most qualified person is recorded in the table. Sixty percent of births inBangladesh are assisted by traditional birth attendants (dai), with relatives and friends assisting in delivering29 percent of births. ~ Less than l0 percent of births are assisted by medically trained personnel---eitherdoctors (4 percent) or nurses, midwives and family welfare visitors (5 percent).It is possible that some women may have reported traditional birth attendants as "friends," since the distinction maybe slight.I04
