If the mother was assisted by more thanone type of provider, only the most qualified person is recorded in the table. Sixty percent of births in<strong>Bangladesh</strong> are assisted by traditional birth attendants (dai), with relatives <strong>and</strong> friends assisting in delivering29 percent of births. ~ Less than l0 percent of births are assisted by medically trained personnel---eitherdoctors (4 percent) or nurses, midwives <strong>and</strong> family welfare visitors (5 percent).It is possible that some women may have reported traditional birth attendants as "friends," since the distinction maybe slight.I04
