The number and timing of antenatal carevisits are considered important to preventing an adverse pregnancy outcome. Care is most effective if thevisits are started early in pregnancy and continue at regular intervals throughout the pregnancy. It is generallyrecommended that antenatal care visits be made monthly for the first 7 months, fortnightly in the 8th month,and then weekly until birth. If the first visit is made at the third month of pregnancy, this schedule translatesto a total of about 12 to 13 visits.Data on the number and timing of visits made by pregnant women are given in Table 8.2 and inFigure 8.1. As mentioned above, for a large majority of births, mothers do not obtain any antenatal care.Among those who do obtain care, the median number of visits is only 2.7, far fewer than the recommended12 visits.100
