Infant mortality rates have declined from around 120 ormore per 1,000 births in the early 1980s to less than 90 in the five years before the B<strong>DHS</strong>. Under-fivemortality has also declined. The 1989 BFS reported rates for 1979 to 1983 of almost 190 deaths per 1,000births (Huq <strong>and</strong> Clel<strong>and</strong>, 1990:116), while the rate from the B<strong>DHS</strong> for the period 198%93 is 133.Although not comparable to nationally-representative data, childhood mortality has also declined in the93
