A woman's age at marriage is highly correlated with her education level. The median age at marriageincreases with the level of education for all age groups of women in Bangladesh. For example, the medianage at first marriage for women age 20-49 increases steadily from 13.9 among women with no education to17,1 for women with some secondary education.5.5 Recent Sexual ActivityIn the absence of contraceptive use, the probability of becoming pregnant is related to the frequencyof intercourse. Thus, information on sexual activity can be used to refine measures of exposure to pregnancy.In the BDHS, all currently married women were asked when they last had sexual intercourse. This questionhas been shown to provide reliable results in Bangladesh (Becker and Begum, 1994). Table 5.6 presents thepercent distribution of currently married women by recent sexual activity.Table 5.6 Recent sexual activityPercent distribution of currently married women by sexual activity in the four weeks preceding the survey, and among thosenot sexually active, the length of time they have been abstaining and whether postpartum or not postpartum, according toselected background characteristics and contraceptive method currently used, Bangladesh 1993-94Not sexually active in last 4 weeksBackground Sexually Abstaining Abstainingcharacteristic/ active (postpartum) (not postpartum) Numbercontraceptive in last ofmethod 4 weeks 0-1 years 2+ years 0-1 years 2+ years Missing Total womenAge20-24 84.4 5.3 0.5 8.8 0.8 0.2 100.0 196425-29 84.6 3.1 0.1 I0.2 1.7 0.2 100.0 191110-1415-1983.985.91.54.50.00.18.78.10.90.45.00.9100.0100.0140122430-34 83.2 2.9 0.2 11.7 1.8 0.2 100.0 135335-39 80.3 1.8 0.2 15.0 2.2 0.6 100.0 107940-44 70.4 0.6 0.5 25.5 2.3 0.6 I00.0 76745-49 57.5 0.4 0.2 35.9 5.3 0.7 100.0 541Duration of union (years)10-14 85.8 3.1 0.1 9.1 1.6 0.4 100.0 177215-19 83.7 2.3 0.2 11.9 1.6 0.3 100.0 i26020-24 g0.5 2.6 0.2 14.7 1.6 0.5 100.O 108225+ 67.1 0.5 0.3 27.9 3.6 0.5 100.0 14980~15-984.084.34.65.20.20.59.38.60.81.01.00.3100.0100.016331735ResidenceUrbanRural82.381.03.33.20.10.312.213.41.71.70.40.5100.0100.010137967DivisionBarisal 77.3 4.0 0.0 17.5 0.8 0.4 100.0 567Chittagong 74.1 4.2 0.8 17.0 3.5 0.4 100.0 2334Dhaka 83.2 3.1 0.1 12.0 1.0 0.5 100.0 2755KhuinaRajshahi82.586.32.22.60.30.013.99.30.61.30.60.5100.0100.011472178EducationNo education 80.9 2.9 0.3 13.7 1.7 0.4 100.0 5093Primary incomplete 80.9 3.5 0.2 13.3 1.3 0.8 100.0 1601Primary complete 80.8 4.0 0.3 12.1 2.2 0.7 100.0 894Secondary/Higher 82.4 3.4 0.2 12.2 1.5 0.3 100.0 1392Contraceptive methodIUD 91.0 0.3 0.0 8.7 0.0 0.0 100.0 196No methodPill72.995.25.70.00.50.017.74.22.70.10.60.510O.0100.049781560SterilizationPeriodic abstinence86.491.30.10.00.00.011.67.61.50.00.31.1100.0100.0822220Other 89.8 0.2 0.0 9.5 0.2 0.2 100.0 1204Total 81.1 3.2 0.3 13.2 1.7 0.5 100.0 898076
