Had Jane Cwayna (pronouncedQwy-na)thoughtshe would have beenvolleyball coach at AntelopeValley College, sheprobably wouldn’t have hada .551 winning percentage, four conference championshipsand coach of the yearawards, nor have 297 careerwins. You see, Cwaynaapplied for the job aswomen’s basketball coach(a position she also heldat AVC until 1990), andclaims if the ad had listedvolleyball as well, she wouldn’t have applied. She took the job anyway, and has, over the past 29 seasons, consistently put her teams in the win column and toward the topof the conference standings, compiling a 297-242 match record. In 2011, Cwayna coached a phoenix, starting 1-8 and finishing10-2 the rest of the way and winning the Foothill Conferencetitle. Allyson Lods was named Foothill Conference Player of theYear that year and Cwayna was again Foothill Conference Coachof the Year.In 2009 she led the Marauders to their first Foothill Conferencechampionship since 1993, setting a record formost straight set wins and boasted the Foothill ConferencePlayer of the Year in Ashley Marroquin. The Marauders were 61-14 over the 1990through 1993 seasons, the first time AVC has had fourstraight double digit win seasons. In that 1993 season, the Marauders were perfect through conference, and won their first-ever home playoff contest, withCwayna being named Foothill Conference Coach ofthe Year.In addition to 1993, her 1982 and 1983 teamswere conference champions. She was named Coachof the Year in 1982, 2004, 2009 and 2011. Cwaynahas sent 18 players to four-year programs, includingsuch notables as Kim Fairchild, who started forthe 1989 NCAA Division II volleyball championsCal State Bakersfield; Heidi Roarty, who played onscholarship at the University of South Florida; PortolaGeorge who played on scholarship for Cal StateBakersfield; Jennifer Lee who played for KansasWeslyan; TaMesha Jefferson and Tiffany Bull whoplayed for Cal State Dominguez Hills and Kristy Nuawho played for Cal State Northridge. From 1981 to 1990, Cwayna led the Marauderwomen’s basketball team. She ended her tenure ascoach with the school’s first-ever conference championshipand as Foothill Conference Coach of the Year.Cwayna began her athletic career swimming thebreaststroke and freestyle in her hometown of GrandHead Coach31st Season - 297-242The Cwayna EraJaneCWAYNARapids, MI.
