Perimeter InstitutePSI FellowsAbout Perimeter InstituteMissionPerimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics is an independent, resident‐based researchinstitute devoted to foundational issues in theoretical physics at the highest levels ofinternational excellence. We strive to create a lively and dynamic research atmospherewhere many approaches to fundamental questions, both orthodox and unorthodox, arepursued simultaneously and where a balance between formal and phenomenologicallyorientedresearch is established. We are determined to collaborate constructively with thesurrounding academic community, in particular by creating outstanding educational andresearch opportunities for graduate students. We are equally determined to create aworld‐class outreach program which conveys the wonder and mystery of the universe andthe importance of future scientific breakthroughs to the general public in Canada andbeyond.Brief HistoryPerimeter Institute was founded on the largesse, innovation and determination of MikeLazaridis, founder and Co‐CEO of Research In Motion (RIM). The Institute was officiallylaunched in October, 2000 with a $100 million personal commitment from Mr. Lazaridis andan additional $20 million from fellow RIM executives. Research operations began in October2001 with a modest research staff of 9 scientists.Ten years after its creation, Perimeter Institute’s international acclaim continues to grow.Since inception, the Institute has:‣ Vaulted Canada’s basic research agenda onto the world stage‣ Recruited leading researchers of international stature. The Institute currently has 96resident scientists, including 14 Faculty, 12 Associate Faculty, 42 PostdoctoralFellows and 28 Graduate Students‣ Fostered collaborations and research productivity in the national and internationalscientific communities via over 1500 researcher visits and the presentation of over1100 seminars and 83 workshops and conferences‣ Contributed over 1300 meaningful, peer‐reviewed, scientific findings andtransferred this knowledge to all manner of partners in the entire research chain‣ Coordinated cross‐appointments and collaborated on high‐level programming withCanadian universities and top institutes around the world‣ Shared the importance of critical inquiry and scientific discovery with students, teachers and the general public across Canada and beyond via over 110 publiclectures, 70 teacher workshops, 100 in‐school presentations; and attendance ofover 75,000 at festivals and open houses31 Caroline Street North, Waterloo, Ontario N2L 2Y5Phone (519) 569-7600 Fax (519) 569-7611

‣ Received an overwhelmingly positive review by NSERC conducted by anindependent panel of scientific experts in September of 2006‣ Celebrated its 10 th year with the Quantum to Cosmos Festival, one of the largestand most comprehensive scientific outreach events ever held in Canada‣ Established the Perimeter Scholars International Master’s program in 2009, inconjunction with the University of Waterloo‣ Built an award winning research facility in 2004, and is currently expanding thefacility to double in size in 2011.While in many ways the Institute has perhaps been more successful and influential thanwildest expectations in a relatively short period of time, there remain tremendousopportunities ahead. The recruitment of Dr. Neil Turok from Cambridge, England, as the Institute’s ExecutiveDirector provides enormous momentum for the ambitious aspirations of PI. Dr. Turok is aninternationally renowned and world leading Cosmologist with broad experience in bothobservational and foundational issues.
