Wingate now awaits the announcementof the NCAA Division II palyoff field on Sunday afternoon.Pressley (Anderson, S.C.) caught 12 passes for a career high 183 yardsand a touchdown to wrap up his stellar career. He completed the best seasonby a Newberry receiver with a school record 86 catches for 1,117 yards and11 touchdowns. Pressley is the first Newberry receiver to break the 1,000-yard mark in a season, as the record was previously held by Tymere Zimmermanwith 977 yards in 2004. The 1,117 yards this year is the sixth-most in aseason in the 35-year history of the South Atlantic Conference.Newberry quarterback Parker Hite (Ninety Six, S.C.) completed 18-of-28 passes for a career-high 266 yards with a touchdown and also rushed fortwo touchdowns. Cornerback Kamaal McIlwain returned a kickoff 80 yardsfor a touchdown in the second quarter, and Brian Spencer (Columbia, S.C.)blocked his third punt of the season.Wingate quarterback Cody Haffly (Locust Grove, Ga.) led the Bulldogsto a stellar offensive performance, completeing 19-of-31 passes for 285yards and five touchdowns. Nelson Woods (Charlotte, N.C.) had 26 carries for181 yards and two scores. Delric Ellington (Charlotte, N.C.) had 10 receptionsfor 173 yards and three touchdowns. Perry Floyd (Gastonia, N.C.) had fourreceptions for 54 yards and two touchdowns.Newberry opened the scoring on its first drive of the game but withfewer points than initially expected. A wide receiver pass from Taniel Massey(Lancaster, S.C.) to Darien Crawford (Aiken, S.C.) was wiped off of the boarddue to a penalty, forcing the Wolves to settle for a 39-yard field goal fromBritt Blackmon (Kershaw, S.C.).The Bulldogs responded with a 7-play, 76-yard drive capped with a42-yard touchdown pass from Haffly to Ellington. After a Newberry threeand-out,Haffly Ellington connected on another score, this time from 22yards out, to make it 14-3.McIlwain would not let the Bulldogs completely steal the momentumthough, returning a short kickoff 80 yards for a score to make it 14-10 at theend of the first quarter. However, the Bulldogs scored again on their nextdrive on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Haffly to Floyd to make it 21-10.A short kick and a couple of passing plays put Newberry inside theWingate 30, but Hite’s pass on first down was picked off by Terrence Stephens(Queen Creek, Ariz.) to snuff out the opportunity. Newberry All-Americansafety Ron Parker (St. Helena Island, S.C.) forced a fumble on the nextdrive which Newberry thought it had recovered, but a Wolves player had hisfoot out of bounds when he fell on the ball, allowing the Bulldogs to retainpossession, but Newberry forced a punt later in the drive.Eleven plays and 72 yards later, the Wolves cut the score down to onepossession on a 33-yard Blackmon field goal. The score was Blackmon’s 10thfield goal of the season, tying him for third in school history for a year.Newberry forced Wingate to punt again on the next drive, but Hite’spass was intercepted on the first play of the ensuing drive. Just five playslater, Haffly connected with Floyd for a 15-yard touchdown to make it a 28-13 game.Another Wingate interception set the Bulldogs up to score, but RPLopez (Lakeland, Fla.) missed a 32-yard field goal attempt as time expired. The miss was Lopez’ first of the season and made the halftime score 28-13.Newberry drove down the field well with Massey at the helm, but his pass on the sixth play of the drive was intercepted by Robert Fletcher (Lancaster, S.C.) at the goal line. The Bulldogs started the drive at their own9-yardline and marched methodically downfield before going for the big play, when Haffly found Ellington for a 41-yard touchdown to make it 42-13.The Wolves responded on offense, trekking 66 yards in seven plays, with Hite making it a 42-19 game after a 6-yard touchdown carry. Wingate was forced to punt on its next drive, and Spencer’s block gave the Wolves achance to start at their own 20 instead of the shadow of their own goalposts. A 9-play, 78-yard drive spanned into the third quarter, and Hite’s quarterback sneak from one yard out made it a 42-26 game.Wingate was not comfortable with the 16-point lead, and a 9-play, 66-yard drive ended with Woods’ 12-yard touchdown carry to extend the lead to 49-26.Pressley’s big day was capped off with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Hite to wrap up a career day and make the final score 49-33.Wingate outgained Newberry, 554-370, and forced four interceptions while giving away none. The Bulldog offense was balanced, with 269 yards on the ground and 285 yards through the air, while the Wolves gained307 yards through the air. Wingate racked up 29 first downs to Newberry’s 19 and the Bulldogs had a 13 minute advantage in possession, holding onto the ball for 36:46 to Newberry’s 23:14.Apollo Stretch (Columbia, S.C.) led all tacklers with 14 stops, while Parker and Arterio Arnold (Greenville, S.C.) each had eight stops.www.
