Newberryis off next week, while Mars Hill hosts Wingate in a battle of 2-0SAC teams.On Newberry’s second drive of the game, a bobbled snap wasrecovered by Mars Hill at the Newberry 26-yardline. The Wolves’ defenseheld the Lions to a 47-yard field goal attempt, which MichaelPinkerton converted with the wind at his back to make it 3-0.Newberry quarterback Bryan Ehrlich (San Antonio, Texas) hada tipped ball intercepted by Marvin James on the next drive. Jamesreturned the ball to the 20-yardline and Mars Hill needed just fourrushes by Jonas Randolph to find paydirt and take a 10-0 lead.A huge completion on the first drive of the second quarterfrom W.T. Murden (West Columbia, S.C.) to Treginald Wilson(Mayesville, S.C.) went for 48 yards on a third-and-6, setting up anAlkeem Sherman (Conway, S.C.) touchdown run from two yards outto cut the lead to 10-7.On the ensuing drive, Mars Hill used a heavy dose of Randolphcapped off with a 21-yard touchdown scamper by Shaikel Davis topush the lead to 17-7 with 9:32 left in the half. An Ehrlich 9-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Bostick(Florence, S.C.) made it a 23-14 game 4:27 left in the third.On Mars Hill’s first drive of the fourth quarter, a Richt pass wasdeflected and picked off by Mike Hopkins (Blackstock, S.C.) at theNewberry 47-yardline. Eight plays later, Ehrlich found Jordan Mc-Donnell (Bluffton, S.C.) for a 2-yard touchdown pass to make it 23-21 with 11:42 remaining.After the teams traded punts, Mars Hill chewed up nearly sevenminutes of clock driving into Newberry territory, but Randolphwas stopped short on a fourth down attempt to give Newberry theball with 2:37 to go.The Wolves converted on one fourth down attempt and gotdown to the Lions’ 38-yardline, but passes on third and fourth downEhrlich was 11-of-27 passing for 112 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, while 10 different Wolves caught passes. Wilson and Livingston each had 48 yards receiving. JohnGadson (North Charleston, S.C.) was the leading rusher with 32 yards.Defensively, Arterio Arnold (Greenville, S.C.) led all tacklers with 11 stops, two sacks and a forced fumble. Dominique Walker (Rock Hill, S.C.) had 10 tackles. Josh Stinson (Chester, S.C.) andDominique Jacobs (Columbia, S.C.) also had sacks.For Mars Hill, Randolph had 43 carries for 221 yards and a touchdown. Richt was 13-of-30 passing for 140 yards and a touchdown, but was sacked four times. Kevin Johnson was the leadingtackler with 10 stops.
