Both teams will play a full SAC schedule aswell as North Greenville, UNC Pembroke and Valdosta State. So far, the common meetshave been a match, with both teams losing to Valdosta State and Mars Hill, and defeatingCarson-Newman.• This is the 89th season of football at Setzler Field and the Wolves’ sixth season on theartificial surface.• The Wolves return home after a three-game road trip, marking the first time since2001 the scarlet and gray played three straight away from Setzler Field.THE SERIES• This game is the 22nd meeting between Newberry and Wingate• Wingate leads the all-time series, 11-10. The series dates back to 1988, a 29-23 Newberrywin.• Last year’s win by Wingate clinched the SAC title and NCAA Playoffs for the Bulldogs forthe first time, and broke a five-year winning streak by Newberry.• Newberry is 4-6 on the road in the series, but 3-3 at Irwin Belk Stadium, includingwins in the last two visits.• Newberry has scored at least 31 points in each of the last eight meetings.THE COACHES<strong>NEW</strong>BERRY: Todd Knight (Gardner-Webb, 1989) is in his third season as Newberry’shead coach and his second season as a collegiate head coach. He has an 12-13 recordand a record of 4-1 against teams ranked in the AFCA Divsion II Top 25. He has a 9-8record against the South Atlantic Conference. In 2009, Knight led Newberry to a 6-4record and became the first Newberry head coach to record a winning record in his inauguralseason since Reed Charpia in 1978. In 2010, Knight led Newberry to a 4-6 record.This is his third meeting with Wingate, with the road team winning each time.WINGATE: Joe Reich (Gettysburg, 1987) is in his 11th season as the Bulldogs’ headcoach and as a collegiate head coach. He has a record of 69-46 overall, which is the fifthmost wins by a SAC head coach. He was the 2010 SAC Coach of the Year after leadingthe Bulldogs to their first-ever playoff berthTHIS WEEK’S OPPONENT: WINGATE• All-SAC quarterback Cody Haffly leads the Bulldogs, already amassing 1,701 yards and16 touchdowns passing on 150-of-250 completion rate with only four interceptions.• 10 different Bulldogs have caught a Haffly TD pass, led by Chris Bowden. He has 40receptions for 577 yards and 4 TDs, with a long catch of 94 yards. Bryan Caffrey (30 rec,372 yds, 3 TDs) and Josh Clawson (26 rec, 242 yds, 2 TDs) are other top targets.• Andrew Nallenweg is the leading rusher with 84 carries for 284 yards and a touchdown.Josh Covington has 35 carries for 168 yards, but has five rushing TDs.• In the return game, Ben Pinkard is one to watch for, having a 100-yard kickoff returnfor a TD.• Kicker Matthew Sierk is 22-of-23 on PAT attempts, but 1-of-3 on field goal attempts,making a 34-yarder against UNC Pembroke, and missing from 37 against Valdosta Stateand 40 against Brevard.• Jared Seate (58 tackles, 6 TFL), Richie Kazazian (46 tackles, 7 TFL, 2 Sack, 4 FR) andJack Taylor (38 tackles, 10 TFL, 3.5 sacks) are defensive leaders.THIS YEAR’S CAPTAINS• The team selected five captains for the 2011 season with two on offense and threeon defense.• The offensive captains are quarterback Bryan Ehrlich, center Chase Gamble andguard Lequawn James.• The defensive captains are inside linebacker Apollo Stretch and cornerback JamesBostick.THE ORDER OF THE GRAY STRIPE• A total of 12 Newberry players wear a distinctive gray stripe down the center of theirhelmets. This is awarded by the coaching staff to players who are not only fine athletesbut who are also exemplary in the classroom and in the community.• Each member of the order signs an oath which reads: “This document certifies thatthe following student-athletes have mutually pledged to each other their commitmentto proudly serve our program with honor on and off the field of friendly strife. Theyfurthermore promise and swear to abide by and stand firm to the rules and regulationsof the program and it is not only their right, but their duty to leave behind a legacy thatwill ensure the successes of Newberry College Football for ages to come.”• The Order represents less than just over five percent of the football program as a whole.• The 12 current members of the Order of the Gray Stripe are- Brandon Bostick, senior wide receiver, Florence, S.C.
