4.1.4 Safety indicatorSafety is often a major concern for MPA managers, particularlyin summer (fires, site health status, etc.). Thisindicator integrates this concept which relates to naturalfactors, extent of visitor use and user activities andbehaviour.4.1.5 Cross-disciplinary indicatorsThese indicators aim to evaluate interactions with theenvironment and the economic repercussions of visitorattendance. They demand in-depth analysis. They canvery often only be implemented as part of research workinvolving managers and experts in sociology, ecology, geography, economics and biology.4.2 Selecting your indicatorsTo study visitor use of an MPA, not all the indicators proposedin this document need necessarily be monitored. The four key questions below can help define the priorityindicators for the study, for appropriate investment intime and resources and optimal success.INDICATORS PROPOSEDin the methodology guideDo they meet the aims of my study andmy needs for information (cf. 3.1)?Can they feasibly be implementedwith my resources (cf.3.2)?Will they provide sufficient informationif the required degree of analysisis level 2 or 4 (cf. 3.2)?Are they relevant inmy type of MPA (cf. 4)?RELEVANT INDICATORSfor the projectFigure 4 : Visitor use study and monitoring indicator selection criteria. Some indicators may be crossed to provide new information. In this way, even a small number of indicatorscan provide broad possibilities in terms of data processingand analysis.BOAT NUMBERINDICATORBoat countUSER PROFILES ANDSurvey of boaters in summerNumber of boatsper mooring areaat 2pm on a summer dayNumber of boaters/boatSanitation equipment on boatsINDICATOR CROSSOVERAssessment of waste dischargedinto the sea by pleasure boatersin one summer dayIs this pressure in summer compatible with theconservation of marine habitats found in themooring areas?Figure 5 : Example of indicator crossover.
