4.1.4 Safety indicatorSafety is often a major concern for MPA managers, particularlyin summer (fires, site health status, etc.). Thisindicator integrates this concept which relates to naturalfactors, extent of visitor use and user activities andbehaviour.4.1.5 Cross-disciplinary indicatorsThese indicators aim to evaluate interactions with theenvironment and the economic repercussions of visitorattendance. They demand in-depth analysis. 4.3 Datasheets for adaptingindicators to your MPAThe indicator datasheets presented in detail in chapter 5have been prepared so that managers can :• assess indicator relevance he based on the visitor useissue and the information they require;• have a framework protocol to adjust the indicator tothe MPA, to the knowledge required, to the requireddegree of analysis and to available resources. The frameworkprotocol establishes the basic methodologyin terms of the type of data gathered, the collectionmethod, the frequency, and the location. It also providesindications about the data collection period andaverage cost. In some cases, several framework protocolsare proposed;• assess the feasibility of implementing indicators at theirsite, and plan any cooperation or anticipate any difficulties.Managers can draw up their own indicator datasheetsbased on the structure of those presented in this guide.4.4 Difficulties often encounteredwhen selecting and adaptingindicatorsManagers very often find themselves faced with :• too many indicators that are too complex to use;• scientific monitoring goals not aligned with theconcerns of the teams tasked with the study in thefield.• The guidelines below will help to avoid certain errorswhen selecting indicators:• re-specify the visitor use monitoring project and alwayskeep the required level of analysis in mind (level 1, 2,3 or 4);• avoid pursuing scientific goals without expert assistance;• build partnerships with stakeholders interested in theproject (local associations, scientists, users, etc.). Byinvolving them in your study, ideas can emerge to jointlydevelop and implement the operational indicators;• develop simple data collection protocols for each indicatorand only gather strictly necessary information;• when monitoring indicators over time, regularly adjustthem to changes in site uses and emerging managementissues.
